Why do people hate casuals?

It's not a case of being a casual.. and more about the attitude on display. If they don't act like know it all and come across as humble and with gaps in boxing knowledge then fine.

Purists though can be just as bad, being a self-prescribed know-it al... with biased recollection of boxing events that they take to the grave... so set in their ways and refusing to accept to other narratives..

Oh and some purists love to have a random hatred of a select few boxers... unjustified... baseless and more often a case of simply "because"...

 

Any passionate boxing fan who thinks casuals are good for the sport needs their head examining, unless they have very little respect for the value of a pound.

The biggest myth: big fights happen because of casual fans. Complete nonsense. Why then has Joshua v Wilder/Fury not happened? Why did Khan v Brook not happen? Because of money and greed. Casual interest and increasing PPV frequency (caused by casual fans) has led to boxers having an inflated view of their value and worth.

Casual interest is the reason why regular Sky cards are now headlined by Allen v Browne and not Whyte v Chisora. Because Whyte and Chisora demand to be on PPV (because of casual interest). In what reality is Allen v Browne an acceptable Sky main event at the O2?

Genuine boxing fans suffer. Not only do we now have to pay to watch quality boxing on the TV more frequently, because of casuals it’s now harder to purchase tickets for shows because hooliganistic alcohol fuelled football fan idiots are purchasing them in droves.

I could go on. I’ve said previously that casual interest is only good for those who make a living from the sport. Boxers and promoters.

The internet has narrowed the gap between so called casual and hardcore fans. It used to be that if you wanted to stay informed you would have to buy boxing mags, videos, and other obscure ****. I used to record a lot of fights off German satellite channels, and had to rely on German teletext for American fight reports the morning after. As much fun as that was, it’s not something that most sane people would (or should) be doing with their time.

These days fights, interviews, press conferences, weigh ins are (sort of) freely available online to anyone with a passing interest. In my experience, people talk far more about boxing, and casual fans are far more informed than they were previously, at least since boxing largely disappeared from free tv.

Most top fighters are in the ring only twice a year, so it’s not that difficult to maintain a reasonably well rounded knowledge of what’s happening. Unfortunately, the few people incapable of doing that somehow manage to find jobs as Sky pundits.

Only earlier I was thinking ‘Tony Hayers has been alright lately’ but then out of nowhere you make reference to opinions i’ve specifically expressed. Obviously, you’ve also taken them out of context. I hadn’t posted on this thread subject nor had I made any passive digs at you, so why are you having a pop?

I said that Fury has ‘defensive’ skill comparable to that of Mayweather. I don’t think that’s too outlandish a comment. It’s my opinion.

I said that Fury’s battle with bipolar, abusing his body, brink of suicide to losing 10 stone & getting back in the ring appealed (and inspired) to those with no real interest in the sport. Therefore, the interest in Fury went beyond the sport and was about raising the awareness of mental health, thus he transcended it.

I probably should have just let your post slide but there you go, I’ve took the bait. Hopefully it doesn’t derail the thread.

 

Unfortunately there are a lot of haters out there & once they’re stance is set, a limitless supply of things to hate. If they are a die hard fan, then casuals become a legitimate target ... Just as a football hooligan will target opposing fans, a UKIP supporter - non British nationals

 

I don't agree with the superiority complex argument.
I think there are valid reasons for hating some casuals. I can't see why anybody would hate somebody for just maybe, watching McGregor v Mayweather or all the AJ fights or whatever other casual behaviour they get up to. They're harming nobody and they're jumping on the hype, I do it with other sports myself.
What will irk people however, are the casuals who do that, but will still argue with a person who simply knows what they're talking about more than them, with no basis of their own opinion. They get their opinions from what they read some commercial guy say. They take it as gospel and so the experienced fan must be wrong to disagree in their eyes. There's nothing worse than a person passionately arguing about something they know nothing about, or don't take the time to learn about

This, for me. Because they have limited knowledge their interest in the sport can be manipulated by promoters and used to produce detritus, that they themselves aren't aware is absolute trash. They tend to be quite partisan as well. This led to - very few but some - people giving Crolla a legitimate chance. Same way they did with Fielding.

Everyone wants good fights. That's all we strive for. But a lack of understanding of who someone can and cannot be competitive with dilutes the product which we receive. And this can then end up with fights being a popularity contest and nothing more. Which ends up with Dave Allen headlining The 02 arena.
