We clearly just have very different views on boxing, and that's not meant as an insult. If my favourite fighter announced he was fighting a corpse that he had said publicly was shot years ago, I would never relent in my utter disgust. You think it's perfectly acceptable, if not ideal. It's simply two very different viewpoints that cannot be reconciled.
Indeed. I used to take a more aggressive viewpoint towards this...but modern boxing...meh. It's just how it is. A lot of padded records and mismatches that come about as a result of promoters, politics and organisations, and the few old school operators that genuinely have a deep opposition level are on their last legs. Perhaps Pacquiao is one of the new breed that has fought good fighters consistently, but I can't think of too many more. I'm too tired and bored to get up in arms about it anymore. I enjoy the good matches when they come along and begrudgingly accept the rest.
I may do now and again, but we'll have to accept you are the cavalry fighting this war, and I am moping somehwhere at the back feeling sorry for myself. Honestly, list active fighters you actually think have a deep competition level. No journeyman types.
Nah, there are many many more members of the cavalry, don't worry about that. Honour and integrity will always have a place in boxing. I can list active fighters with a better resume than Joe C if you want, and I can list active fighters that I don't believe would fight someone they had said publicly was shot years ago if that's any good?
I don't believe Calzaghe thought fighting Pavlik was beneath him at all, it's just that Jones was clearly the easier option.
:-( I was talking with reference to the state of boxing as a whole in terms of matchmaking. Not to defend Calzaghe, or anybody else, but simply to express my disapointment at the way things are. Calzaghe is part of that, but there are many more. It's the attitude of people around boxing (and that includes the fans reaction to losses) that needs changing. But okay, the everyday crusade against Calzaghe works.
This is what I said was a waste of time pages ago: defending the indefensible, which is what you then tried to do. Enjoy the guy's fighting style if you wish, he is a very good fighter after all, but there's no need to try and protect him from the reality that he has created.
Shane Mosley has an unparalleled resume in boxing. The only person missing from it, that he could have realistically fought, is PBF and he may still get him.
Joe turned down Pavlik for RJJ and now possibly Dawson for retirement. Not impressed. Even if Pavlik isn't as good as people think, Joe would have got props for 'exposing' him. He should know what that can do for his career i.e. Lacy. Thing about Pavlik and Dawson is they can't be exposed. If they lose, they lose. They are already proven elite fighters. Both are more proven than Lacy and Kessler. The X win was a great one but the RJJ and retirement line are questionable. I like the RJJ win and it works cos X beat Pavlik. However the winner of Tarver v Dawson II he has to face!
