People on here call Shavers power overrated when he was voted puncher of the century just 11 years ago by "experts" Not people who sit around trashing the old guys. Also it is known that fighters of today are physically big but don't hit as hard as fighters of the past. I'm also willing to bet that over 85% of the fighters today couldn't go a whole 15 rounds. So my question is do you think Shavers power was overrated? I'm mean he's the only guy George Foreman was afraid to fight. Sure he was sloppy and wasn't a great finisher, nor boxer at that but I'm willing to bet that any fighter today couldn't take a single direct shot from Shavers and keep standing.
Foreman also said fighting Frazier scared him to death. Shavers is probably considered overrated because he was mediocre, losing to 20-24 journeyman Stallings, was annihilated in one round by an old 200lbs Quarry, couldn't beat a near-dead Ali, etc. Basically lost every time he fought a live contender or better. His power is extraordinary though, but everything else was mediocre. Power only gets you so far.
Shavers, like many fighters of the past, gets underrated by some younger boxing fans who just don't realize what a competitive era it was for HWs in the 1960s and 70s. A guy who was a contender then would likely have been a dominant champion in virtually any other era.
I don't know why people call his power overrated unless they were hit by George Foreman Joe Frazier Sonny Liston etc and Shavers and then say he's not the hardest that's good but they didn't they've watched him Ali fought all those guys Liston Foreman Frazier Lyle etc and called Shavers the hardest puncher. Lyle fought Foreman as well and both of them got bashed around taking each others best shots and guess what Lyle calls Shavers the hardest puncher again I don't think it's a coincidence
And overrated by others who refuse to accept that physically larger men on average take a better punch than cruiserweights and light heavyweights.
Because he never KOed any of the upper tier fighters he fought. Savage punchers can do that. Shavers couldn't.
I believe it was Bob Fitzsimmons who said, over a century ago, "the bigger they are, the harder they fall.":yep
That's not true. There is a reason statistically- there are more upsets in the heavyweight division than any other division in boxing. The higher you go.. the more power you generate but at heavyweight.. you just can't take as much punishment as the lower weights. That's why when a heavyweight is hurt.. their recovery rate is much lower than say a 130 Pound fighter.
When a heavyweight is hurt. The difficulty is in doing that in the first place. Bigger fighters are harder to hurt than smaller fighters. Easier to hit maybe, but that's due to lack of mobility, reactive speed etc.
Of course I do. Size is not everything in boxing. Fitzsimmons had taken on and beaten larger fighters, and he was reflecting his belief that his power would allow him to beat larger men - which it did. Similarly with Shavers, I could easily see him knocking out some of today's mediocre HWs, many of whose chins are, well, less than sturdy.
