Why do people insist on calling Marciano a heavyweight and keep comparing him to modern heavyweights

And how many modern heavyweights did Bob fight? Lol he fought a few big bums back when boxing was still in its baby stages like. Charles Puff who had only 1 fight in his career. Abe Coughle who only had one bout. Millard Zender who only had one pro bout and a couple of other bums who weighed over 200 pounds. If you think any of these guys were as skilled as modern big men then maybe you should stick to a sport that is easier to follow.

Well, you didn't refute any of my points beside revealing your fetish for crack smoking mama. And Marciano was a heavyweight in his day and accomplished as such.
If he can't beat Joshua or Wilder or Price so what.

Marciano was short, light, short reach etc etc, but in his later build up to and while champ he was always as fit as it possible to be, had unbelievable stamina, was virtually impervious to pain, had a never say die attitude and had a inner belief that he was unbeatable, those qualities would make him a opponent that a great deal of boxers in the modern era would rightly fear facing.

In modern era i am sure Marcianos wiley and wise trainer Charley Goldman would have moulded Marciano well to fight some of the present behemoths, Marciano listened and learned from the great Mr Goldman.

    1. The heavyweight limit at the time was 175 and up. Since Marciano fought over that limit, he was a heavyweight.

    2. He might have deserved losses to LaStarza and Lowry the first time around (it's not like we have the film to judge for ourselves) but he certainly improved upon his performance in rematches against them. Roland was brutalized, and even Lowry admits he lost the second time around. In fact, he improved his performance in all the rematches he fought. Not too many guys can say the same thing.

    3. The only thing you can do as a fighter and champion was to beat the best guy available. Marciano did that during his tenure as champion. Louis was a faded former champ on an eight fight win streak. Charles was a former champ and still in reasonably good form (coming off wins over Wallace and Satterfield) going into the fight. Walcott was the heavyweight champ. Moore was the LH champ, on a 21 fight win streak, and coming off a win over Valdes.
That's a pretty decent lineup, even if most were past their peak. Plus, they pass the eye test better than a lot of more modern fighters in and around their weight.

    4. Speaking of passing the eye test, as awkward as Marciano was, he still passes the eye test better than someone like, say, Marco Huck. And if a brute like Huck can bag a title, rack up double digit defenses and arguably beat current top heavyweight Povetkin, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Marciano being able to do the same.

If you made an 8 man tournament of boxers who effectively fought at under 200 lbs. it would include Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey, Joe Frazier, Evander Holyfield, Michael Spinks, Gene Tunney and Marciano. . . . .and would be the all time greatest tournament ever.

I remember a report asked Antoine Walker when he was playing for the Celtics, "Antione, why do you take so many threes?"

He said; "because there ain't no fours."

Because even among the modern heavyweights Marciano would still be a champion. Also, Marciano fought Shkor, who was 6'4" 220lbs and had a good reach and was stopped by both Marciano and Charles. Charles also beat Dave Ashley who was 6'6" 250 lbs.

Like any great boxer, Marciano adjusted his weight to the demands of his era and his opponents.

He was 191 against 220 pound mauler Shkor.
And dropped to 186 to face 180 lb mover Lowry in his next fight.
He then moved back to 191 to face 230 pound Bill Wilson.

Here he is at 193, against Keene Simmons and looking very fit.

He came in lighter against more mobile fighters, and heavier against bigger physical opponents. You are crazy if you think he would come in at 180-184 if he had to face 220 plus pound opponents regularly.

larry holmes, is that you? sorry your effort to fight bums until you broke the 49-0 mark failed. you just couldn't deal with an actual atg light hw, nor mike tyson. congrats on your best win being a robbery versus shot ken norton though.
