Why do people rank Chavez so high?

I've seen this guy rated in the top 20-30 and he does not belong. He had great skill - great chin and power and underrated defense.

But people seem to rate him more on popularity and his mythical status instead of his actual substance

His best accomplishments are his very questionable first win over Taylor, beating Haugen, and Camacho. Hardly the quality of an all time great, especially considering Haugen and Camacho never beat anyone including each other (past prime opponents like Duran and Leonard don't count)

Also, when Taylor was whipping him, Taylor was very green with only about 25 fights. Then his olympic teammate Pernell beat him even more easily. When he fought top level and not top level (Taylor) competition, he got dismantled

you could say - oh chavez was past it when he fought pernell, but regardless he was still dominated, and its not like Chavez was completely a shell of his old self when he got to pernell.

your 0 and the number of titles in X amount of weight classes is only worth as much as your competition, so don't say stuff like - oh 87-0, X amount of KOs, X amount of title defenses. If you go by that criteria people like the Klitschkos would be considered all time greats.

Because of Rosario, Jose Luiz Ramirez, Roger Mayweather, and his consistency. Chavez was great -- that Whitaker beat him speaks of the class of Whitaker. No shame in losing to another great fighter. One of them has to!

Edit: And Wladimir Klitschko is undeniably an ATG. This will be undisputed ten years from now, same as it was with Lennox Lewis.

Luis Ramirez lost every time he fought a good opponent - including his gift against Pernell
    Rosario - same
Roger Mayweather - only good win was Pazienza

Sam Peter as your best win does not make you an all time great. Lennox beat Holyfield twice, Morrison, and overrated Vitali - who are all better than Wlad's opponents by far. That is not a good comparison

There's no doubt Chavez had a padded record, and there's no doubt he gets a bounce in the rankings. But that doesn't mean he's not an atg. He was a brilliant fighter, with a great chin and natural fighting instincts.

Although he lacked a single, monumental win over a fellow atg. like Duran-Leonard or Ali-Foreman, but he did beat plenty of quality wins. Mayweather, Rosario, Ramirez, Alli, Martinez, Taylor, Haugen, all good fighters, all got beaten.

You're nitpicking to a ridiculous degree if you're dismissing Haugen, Camacho, Ramirez, Rosario and Mayweather out of hand. Virtually no ATG would stand up to such an unfair level of scrutiny as you're applying here.

How was his first Taylor win questionable? Was the time left? Yes. Could Meldrick continue, No.

Taylor was a great fighter the night Chavez dismantled him. Not too many 140lbers would have beaten him that night. I would probably put Chavez in my top 30 or 40 P4P. He was dominant and consistant.

He won a string of title fights that was uncommon. Guys like Mayweather, Rosario, Camacho, Ramirez and Meldrick Taylor 2x. He also beat alot of solid mid level guy like Haugen, LaPorte, Ali etc.

    Great Career.

I certainly dont. most of his opposition he was matched up against were hand me downs, everyone from Mayweather to Laporte to Lockridge to Haugen to Camacho

and whoever WASNT, he struggled against, relying on gift decisions to escape unbeaten

where was JC when he competed in the same two divisions as Camacho early - mid 1980s?

too much conicidence to believe it was an accident he didnt meet with the head guy

in fact, u could say that the slower Camacho ran, the slower JC pursued a shot against him

Hector wouldve ate that fool alive!

my opinion, JC was good but not the real deal, otherwise he wouldve met and beat the top man at both 130 & 135

Chavez was a great fighter. No question. Look at his fights! At his best his technique and timing was quality. Standing in front of his man he did not get hit and he put a well timed punch into any space that came up. Fantastic body punching. He dismantled fighters of all levels. J.C.C was beating the best around who were also winning belts and he was incredibly active. That's a great fighter. The gift decisions came later. He had already paid his dues as a great fighter by then. It's not like it was the gift decisions that made him. What made him was the proven quality and dominance that he already displayed up to the Taylor fight. If Joe Louis had never rematched Jersey Joe Walcott he would still be a great fighter.

He also beat Laporte and Lockridge in superb figths, these guys would run the division today. You know nothing man, it's obvious you are about 15 years old. And it's obvious you haven't seen most of the great Chavez fights, you wouldn't embarass yourself if you had.

Julio Cesar Chavez holds records for most successful defenses of world titles (27), most title fight victories (31), most title fights (37), and he is after Joe Louis with (23) for most title defenses won by knockout (21). Chávez also has the longest undefeated streak in boxing history, 13 years.

Here we go again, i'm so sick to death of everyone saying Taylor schooled and whipped Chavez in the first fight, let me just point some things out. Taylor suffered a broken eye socket, broken ribs, badly busted up face, had a lot of blood pumped from his stomach, was pissing blood for weeks and was in hospital for almost 2 weeks following the fight. So how the hell did Taylor school Chavez.

Whitaker Whooped Chavez, Meldrick Taylor did not.

Camacho fought at 130 lbs. until 1983. Then as a lw. from 84-86, moving up to 140 in 87 staying there until he faced JCC in 92.

JCC first entered the World ratings as a jr lw. in 1984, fighting that year the title vacated by Macho, and he stayed at the division until 1987.
He moved up to 135 late 1987 and stayed there until 1989 when he won the 140lbs. title.
So it was omly from 1989 that Camacho and JCC were competing in the same division.
