Why do people rate Manny Pacquaio over Tommy Hearns on their ATG list???

Ive seen a few threads where they were measuring where Manny belongs in the all-time greats list, and Tommy Hearns should be acknowledged as a greater fighter.

He fought stiffer competition and beat fighters rated higher than Manny's best opponents so it doesnt make sense.

Tommy Hearns was the first fighter to win titles in 4 weight classes. Spanning from 147-175 and fought as high as cruiserweight. The only man to kayo the teak tough Roberto Duran, the only man to outbox a prime Wilfred Benitez who is one of the greatest defensive fighter ever.

Hearns is arguably the greatest junior middleweight ever and one of the best punchers of all-time and at one point in his prime he went back and forth between junior middle and super middleweight beating every one which is true pound for pound stuff.

Also Ray Leonard admits he lost the second fight which was a draw and Leonard in most cases is a top ten p4p fighter of all-time, at the worst top 20. He and Leonard are equals.

In his prime his only loses were to Leonard who is consensus number 2 all-time at welterweight and Hagler who in most cases is seen as the best ever at middleweight.

Some will bring up Barkley but he was past prime by that point, but still came back to beat undefeated silver medallist Virgil Hill.

IDK, you have to be pretty biased to say Manny rates over Hearns who fought in one the greatest eras of boxing for 135-160 and emerged as one of the best.

I don't believe in ATG lists but I agree, Hearns is criminally underrated at times. It pains me to see people rank Leonard so much higher.

IDK, Hearns the main reason he ranks so high. The first fight was an absolute classic. Havent seen a great fight at such a high skill level in a long time. Too young prime all-time greats

No way Manny is higher on the All Time Greatest List. Even the loses he took overshadowed Manny's win. I would not place him higher however, Manny is not too far behind. Pacquiao is an extraordinary fighter by every stretch of the term. His skill level is low but his ability to consistently break opponents down with one solid game plan is unbelievable. Tommy would not be beaten by one type of style. Ray Leonard had to become a hunter, prey and hunter again in order to beat him. Manny would have been 5'6 prey.

Losing to Leonard in the ****ing 14th Round, and then coming back to draw him in a fight where most think he won hands down, and then losing in 3 to Hagler where he did the definition of "going out on your shield" and KOing the guy with one of the best chins ever (Duran) with (in my biased opinion) the greatest KO punch in the history of the motha****in world....

is something Pac will have to do a lot of work to surpass when it comes to greatness. And I don't understand how he gets rated so much lower then Leonard either???

I agree mostly, just a couple of things I disagree on - nothing major - but here they are anyway.....

Im not sure that MOST rank Hagler as the best ever at MW....

I dont think SRL & Tommy are equals - closer than some might think but not equals - as Ray won the primes fight by TKO & has that Hagler victory....

Leonard also outboxed Benitez so both he AND Tommy are the only ones to do it + Ray stopped him at the death also.

    :good

He's several spaces below Hearns on my personal list. Not a knock on Pac, but it's pretty much just as you said. Hearns was fighting such a line of talent that he even trumps Pac who fought some truly great fighters in JMM, MAB and EM who are still his best opposition. Hearns was masterclass as a boxer and had had the same warrior heart that Pac had. I can't say Pac has his boxing skill or is H2H as good but maybe I'll think differently later. Sometimes they have to be retired a while before you really "get" the scope of their achievements.

As a man that likes all members of the fab 4 quite a bit, I have to agree, to me its very minimal between ALL members of the fab 4, I do tend to have Duran & Leonard ahead of Hearns & Hagler but its very very close & some posters seem as if they are plain taking the **** when dishing out the ranking of the Hitman.

Hearns must be rated higher than Pac. I have always wondered what the outcome of Hearns-Leonard I would have been if their was a 12 round limit in 1981. Also, would Hearns have worked his jab and stayed on his bike more if that groupie hadn't given him the ill-fated massage before the Hagler fight in 1985? You can always create a bunch of what ifs for every fight, but it seems as if Tommy has a quite a few. I still rank him a couple notch higher than Pac.

    I understand your view:smoke

IMO Benitez was outmuscled by Leonard who never dealt with a fighter more elusive than himself and just as fast, he adjusted to the style and proved physically stronger.

As Far as Hagler.....Himself, Harry Greb, and Carlos Monzon are who most would say was the best ever at middleweight, if he isnt number one he is top 3 at least.

The fight was back and forth between Leonard and Hearns , their styles mesh so well, but you gotta admit even though he lost, he was a lil bit ahead or draw before the stoppage. It was that great a fight although Hearns has to be a few spots behind Leonard but not the country mile the RING and others have in their rankings.:good

I rate pac over hearns. I don't really like to rate guys who are huge but fight smaller men but is just me.
