Why do people say about any fighter with a low left hand...

A lot of people who have never boxed, dont really understand how useful it is. They think that keeping your hand low is just a way of showing off. They dont know its really meant for baiting.

 

Annoys me too.

Why do commentaors keep saying "he's gotta keep his hands up"?

He's kept his hands by his balls for 25 fights and he's gonna stop now?

 

a) Jack Johnson used it over 100 years ago.

 

Roy Jones didn't invent anything. Hearns had the low left 11 years before Jones became a professional. It never hurt Hearns because he would back up and changed his style for it, although if you watch the Virgil Hill fight Hearns has his left up higher. So he put it up in his later career since his legs were not moving him around as much. When Tommy Hearns was younger he would wait for guys to try and throw a punch and counter. If you are quick you can do that. A slow guy is not going to do that.

I just think its bad idea for any fighter, no matter how fast they are.

Once your legs slow down, or if your speed declines, or even if you get hurt in a fight and you are woozy going on reflex, you are going to be hugely open to a big counter shot.

 

A. NO. Jones did not invent it.
B. Only if you have speed & know how to use distance is it effective.
C. Someday it will lead to excitement when an overhand shot catches them
(Check Jones Jr. Vs. Tarver/Johnson, any fight Hearns ever suffered a K.O.)
D. I disagree, Clinchers/Runners/Feather fisted/Pot Shotters are just as hated.

IMO, here is what they mean when the say.... (Thread title)
Translation = "This guy don't have Jones Jr. Speed to get away with it" (low left)
(But they are just saying it in a different way)

 

Keeping your left hand low makes the jab come off the hip... which isn't so bad until you consider the fact that when a jab coming from that low leaves you a little more vulnereable for a counter over the top. For two reason, 1) Since the jab is comes upward it travels a slightly longer distance to hit your opponent and therefore a well timed counter can get to you 1st before your jab gets the chance to hit your opponent. And 2) when you throw the jab from the hip you tend to lean your head back away from the punch instead of keeping your chin tucked underneath your shoulder, which is the correct way to throw a jab, leaving your head much more open for that well timed punch over the top.

Leaving you lead hand low has it's usefulness, but you do it at your own risk.

Because they keep getting tagged over and over because of it. While Jones, in his prime, didn't.

Obviously they mean x fighter doesn't have the reflexes to do something like that.

 

Because you need to be very talented (like Jones), or very skilled (like Toney) fo it to be effective. Froch isn't, he should fight more conventionally; or, more accurately, he should have done, i agree its now too late to change much.
