No, you are the one who should re-watch. This time in slow-motion.

    1. It's not my thread and I do agree with a lot of what you are saying, however i was responding to what you said.

Also I am not sure RJJ was better for Tarver and Johnson that vs Calzaghe due to taking that weight off.

In regard to the thread title, I think Joe was never a power puncher, but he had OK power which he stopped using later in his career due to his fragile hands.

Why? What difference will that make?? Will that make punches that hit air and forearms suddenly swoop round to the face and head? I doubt it. Neither Calzaghe nor Hopkins landed many clean punches, and no amount of joypad-clicking or slow-mo wishing can change that.

I agree with your last sentence. That's my feeling too.

Re Jones, he is worse now than he was then. The difference is then he was fighting hungry world-class light-heavyweights (Tarver & Johnson) and now he is fighting overweight, shot and semi-motivated has-beens (Trinidad & Lacy).

I think people have a natural inclination to compare Calzaghe to Roy Jones. After all, they were both great fighters who relied on speed and movement. The only difference was that Jones could really punch. Calzaghe simply did not possess that kind of power. All you have to do is watch a Roy Jones highlight video and then watch a Calzaghe one right after that. With Jones you'll see and array of awesome kayos....with Calzaghe, well, you'll see a lot of skill, but not much power. Bottom line: people say he couldn't punch because it was true.

because he's not a GREAT puncher. he's a good puncher whose hands broke more than malinaggi's. of course he could punch, he's a boxer. but at the end of the day that really wasn't what won most of his fights, it was speed and skill

check out his earlier fights, you could hear every shot he landed and even capable journeymen were going down and rolling around in pain from one or two shots.

also, everybody whos ever had to fight him has said "I can walk through those slaps all day" then after getting KOd in about the second they say "well he slaps hard ill giveh im that...."

didnt jones even say his shots hurt a lot more than they look.
