Why do people say Douglas was fat against Holyfield ? He looks about as fit as a modern heavyweight

Douglas added some weight but people in todays age do that all the time for extra power. Douglas didn't look less athletic than usual

I think it was more the way that Buster folded plus the weight gain, the reason he gets stick.
What ever shape he was in against Holyfield, he didn't show that same steel he had against Tyson.

He was 15 lbs heavier than he was with Tyson, 6 lbs over his optimum weight (accroding to himself). He returned to his old pre-Tucker habits after beating Mike, showing he wasn't worthy of the crown.

He gained 15lbs from his best form against Tyson. It was all around his waist. That was a sign he wasnt mentally ready to defend the title.

Adding 15 lbs from your best performance is not an encouraging sign. I remember that there was a big question as to what version of Douglas would turn up, and the weight gain answered that question.

now days heavyweights are often overweight.

Parker added 20 lbs but he did it with tons of weight lifting and a proper nutritionist.

Douglas did it by eating burgers.

Imagine is Usyk came in at 240 lbs in his next fight - he would lose.

I agree I think with the spirit of the OP. There was a lot of Tyson related reaching in that chat and it was unfair to Holyfield. You can watch Douglas box McCall at basically the same weight (3lbs lighter or something) 18 months before and he's excellent.

I can't find any info on Buster's weight for McCall. Do you have anything by hand? He was 226 lbs against Berbick when he looked the best in his pre-Tyson career.

The Kiltschko's were really kinda a anomaly with the physical shape they used to come in as bigger guys.

But sometimes with bigger men there weight isn't telling the full story someone like Tyson Fury is still fit despite being coming in heavier than he probably should.

Douglas was in dreadful shape for Holyfield. Douglas totally blew up after the Tyson victory by overeating and doing the talk show circuits. It is understandable. He went from a nobody to a celebrity overnight. He dropped around 15-20 pounds in the weeks before Holyfield, and was still 15 pounds heavier. I am from Columbus, and, everyone who saw him in camp knew he barely trained for Evander. He ordered pizza to be delivered to the sauna where he was trying to sweat down before the weigh in.

or maybe it's nonsense? maybe he was in better shape than with Tyson and his defeat is just Douglas fanboys' excuses? 30 years and past prime? please.. he has already accepted his mother's death,.
ok, it's just a joke. But it can be serious

He put on far less weight than Parker has, and everyone’s talking about Parker’s great form, he was also leaner than Kabayel etc, but it was also written on Douglas’s face that he wasn’t up for it, but Holyfield would’ve always had beaten him IMO, there a quality difference and also styles, Holyfield had better tools to deal with Douglas than Tyson.

I think it has less to do with his weight and more about how he gained it.

He’d done very little training for this fight. Lou Duva made him sit in a sauna to lose weight because he refused to do anything resembling road-work….. Douglas ended up ordering multiple large pizzas to the sauna.

There’s a night and day difference between Douglas’s performance against Holy and Douglas’s performance against McCall (let alone Tyson).
