Why do people say "Lineal" when they mean "Ring"

    Wlad was never truly a "Lineal" champ, he was a Ring champ. Ring has done a good job of marketing their title as lineal, but it's not. True lineal can only happen if A. There is an unbroken string of undisputed champs to time immemorial or B All belts are united, thus creating an undisputed champ from which a lineal champ can flow.

    To be clear, I'm not discrediting Wlad, it's next to impossible to become lineal in this era. The point is people should stop overfocusing on whether someone is "lineal" or not and just look at credibility of belt, resume, etc.

    I believe Wlad was lineal.
    There's no hard and fast rule about how a new "line" starts. It doesn't have to be unifying all the belts. Wlad was proven to be the outstanding fighter in the world, and that can be argued at various points over the years based on his wins, and was especially clear when Vitali retired - there was no reason to dispute it.
    The WBC calling Bermane Stiverne champion just made their belt look silly, it hardly invalidated the claim that championship lineage belonged to Wlad at that point, if not years earlier.

    I don't have a problem with your way of looking at it. Although, imo Vitali was the best hw while they were both active, once he retired, Wlad was clearly the best.

    I saw Wladimir as the lineal champion, the number one. Who cares about all the belts, it was obvious that Wladimir was the true champion, and now the true champion is Tyson Fury. Tyson win was the best thing to happen to heavyweight boxing because it opened up the whole division from wladimir's dominance, but then he messed it all up by going AWOL.

    Wlad was undisputably the man of the division for years, that makes him a lineal champion in my eyes. You're right, I agree with you on this, people here focus on technicalities.

    I'm not really a fan of the whole concept either. For me a unified or undisputed champion means more.

    Wlad was lineal champ. Linear champs can be crowned after the line is broken.

    If you mean he was the best champ after his bro retired, then I agree with you(although that's not really lineal).

    But otherwise, you are probably going off of Rings criteria of making a champ when their top two fighters face each other. That's Rings standard, not an actual new lineal line. That can only be created by undisputed champs.

    Lennox Lewis was Lineal Champion until he retired in 2004. The Lineal Title stayed vacant for 5 years until Wladimir fought Chagaev. Wladimir won and became Lineal (and Ring) Champion. Wladimir remained Lineal Champ until the Tyson Fury bout.

    That's why it is now RING title, not lineal.

    Once a lineal title ceases to be the-man-who-beat-the-man-who-beat-the-man it is no longer truly lineal.

    Take the middleweight lineal title for example. It has about 8 broken links in it since its inception and between 1993 and 2001 there wasn't even a recognized lineal champion.

    The-man-who-beat-the-man-who-beat-the-man ceased to bestow most lineal titles decades ago.

    There are about 8 broken links in the middleweight chain just for starters.

    Wrong. Wladimir won the vacant Ring Title and the vacant Lineal Title vs Chagaev. The Ring Title doesn't always follow the Lineal Champ, but in this case it did.
