Why do people say Tyson was visibly out of shape against Douglas?

yes douglas was controlling his mind making him choose not to weave and bob and fire from all angles.

    warning - kliturd detected.

first, I abhor Tyson, but I don't pretend he didn't unify the world title practically out of high school, an unprecedented level of ability required there.

second - my previous point. Tyson wasn't bobbing, weaving, angling, things not especially stopped by jabs..they are in fact the counteraction to jabs.

third - I agree that Douglas's excellence that night contributed also.

As you can, I am not in denial of the facts. Are you?

Yeah, and Buster Douglas was hardly a Spartan warrior.

The way people go on about it, you'd think the 'adverse effects' of s*ex, drugs, alcohol and junk food only existed in the world of Mike Tyson.

Tyson didn't have time to bob and weave, Douglas was picking him off and punishing him. He hurt Tyson early and had him buying feints, he absolutely destroyed him.

Question to all you nuthuggers?? Don't you think it's funny how you come out with every excuse under the sun yet conveniently forget that Douglas was far from 100%

Douglas had been pretty badly ill coming upto the bout and was on medication, funny how that part is forgot isn't it....

Tons of chiseled guys go in the gym all the time and can't last a round, are we really basing this off weight alone? Sure he was still in decent shape but not nearly what most were used to seeing out of him, he was mentally out of the fight as well and proved to be his undoing.

I'm not saying Tyson was peaked, either physically or mentally, because by all reports he was far from it. I am saying that one can not necessarily judge by appearances in an athlete of that age. But Tyson had been on an ever increasing tear of booze, broads and drugs since the days of Berbick. It was going to catch up to him eventually either through physical degeneration or lack of preparation. And it did.

this is it. Tyson did not have the mindset for longevity.

in migitation, the light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and Mike had burned so very very brightly. On that note, I have no idea what Joe Louis was smoking to stick around at the top so long.

Tyson got " into shape" for douglas but he did it within 2 weeks rather than 6 weeks.it finished him left im weak, depleted.us he was screwing japanese girls and women with reckless abandon. Yes he made a acceptable weight, yes he didnt look that bad but inside he was finished.

Find it quite poor that so much credit is taken from Buster regarding that bout. It was a brilliant performance and he was a very good fighter that night.

I agree you can't judge by appearance, especially at that age, that's 100% evident.
But I see very little evidence that Tyson was on some wild partying spree since the Berbick fight. He might have skipped training camp a day here and there but generally he was as hard-working a champion as we'd seen in a long time.
And, even if he was on some "wild spree" (and we might all have different standards as to what constitutes that), he still probably trained better and more disciplined than some of his best challengers.
It all seems like a lot of revisionist excuse-making for Tyson.
