Why do people say Tyson was visibly out of shape against Douglas?

Buster got up from his knockdown while Tyson went into Amir Khan mode, Tyson was simply destroyed along with his aura.

Never have I seen a fighter with such a reputation get such a one sided ass kicking by a featherfisted journeyman,..

I half agree with that, I never seen that kind of dominance over such a highly rated champion either but that's half your answer in term of was Tyson fully prepared. Douglas wasn't really feather fisted either, do some research on the guy for Christ sake lol, he was a decent fighter that was an under achiever, he obviously had talent beyond a journeyman. waste of time answering these posts.

Tyson was close to 300lbs a couple of weeks out, he was a soft 220 with no muscle density due to basically not training or eating properly, champaigne and cocaine every night. He looked nothing like his usual self, his body was almost that of somebody elses it seemed.

I wouldn't say he was a big puncher no, but not feather fisted either. He could do some damage with those combinations. When he was on he showed he was a quality fighter, its just a shame he was rarely (if ever) in that form.

Wass seems to live in a world where Tyson was just a marginally good heavyweight who would have been beaten quite often if more of his opponents had only fought smarter and more bravely.

Not in the 80s, he wasn't. I assume that you're going to pretend that he was as good in the mid/late 90s as he was in his championship years though?

Bruno had a chance in 89 but lacked the courage of Buster to go for it.

No, Bruno got worn down and beat up. He could have come with all the courage he wanted, he was still gonna get his ass kicked.

Up to the Spinks fight Tyson stayed on top of his game .. he was actually already starting to slip a bit mentally before Spinks with all the distractions but his exceptional physical gifts kept him in the game .. he was also lucky that Spinks, while a terrific fighter was a small heavyweight and matched up exceptionally well for Tyson .. by the time he fought Dougles Tyson was not truing seriously, had morphed his style to head hunting and going for the KO and lost his mental edge, a high issue with him as essentially Mike was a very small heavyweight and needed to be on the top of his game to dominate ..
