Why do people say Tyson was visibly out of shape against Douglas?

When meeting Tyson it is quite shocking how small he is. Holyfield joked about this in an interview a few years back, saying that he, at 6-1/210, was a midget in a division of giants, and that people didn't realize how exceptional it was for Tyson, who was quite a bit smaller, to rip a hole in the division and control it for a few years. It really was great accomplishment, but one which was destined by his nature and the nature of his style to be short-lived.

I'm talking specifically about R1 when Bruno rocked Tyson, he failed to carry on the onslaught which could have stopped Tyson.

You need to watch the fight again, he did carry on, its just that he was trying to outslug a superior slugger.

He rocked Tyson for a couple of seconds, Tyson recovered and then put a beating on Bruno

Just because you are 220 lbs doesn't mean you are fully conditioned for a tough fight in terms of fitness and stamina point of view. Not when you were 250 lbs 2 weeks ago and went down to 220 lbs because of being on a crash diet with very little training, road work and actual sparring involved.

It takes constant repetition, practice, training to keep your skills, reflexes sharp and up to date.

The Bruno fight took place 8 months after spinks and mikes skills were gradually eroding. He still had some remnants of his old skills in the Bruno fight.

By the time the Douglas fight came 15 months later, his poor lifestyle had just about taken a toll.

In fact if you substitute douglas with Bruno in 1989 and Bruno with douglas in 1990, Tyson might have over come douglas in 1989 and succumbed to Bruno in 1990.

It's all about what exact state you are in on fight night.

It's natural also to become so over confident, full of yourself after going through so many fights like a breeze.

I wish Tyson had a chance to even the score against douglas in a rematch, a Tyson that turns up without underestimating his opponent is a completely different fighter compared to the one that turns up unprepared. Isn't that the excuse lenni fans use for his losses? Why not give the same allowance to Tyson?

He was when he landed in Tokyo. Just check out articles on the subject. He was in no condition to go to war. But I doubt you will ever except other wise

One day before the fight? I have seen a video of him landing in Tokyo two weeks before the fight over weight and looking bloated, heavy.

Secondly just because he is 220 doesn't mean he is in good shape from a fitness or stamina point of view.

Not one day before the fight, he was in Tokyo feeding the pigeons and watching some Japs play Basketball. Please post these vids you've seen of him fat and bloated.

Are you sure the video is from 1990 as opposed to 1988 against tubbs. You might have made an error, wrong time period.

Oh I'm definitely sure it was in 1990 for the Douglas fight, think you've made the error....

I think Spinks could've beaten Mike if he didn't **** himself. Same with Bruno (first fight). Tyson really was there for the taking at that time, but his power got him through. He just didn't have it mentally or passionately to train anymore.
