Why do people seem to hold the Cockell fight against Marciano?

I think you're way off the mark here.

The one saving grace of rocky's career is his outstanding championship run with respect to his era. Valdes aside he beat every number 1 contender of his reign.

The issue with don is that he's the one opponent who wasn't ranked above nino.

Rocky is well regarded as one of the more comprehensive champions in history.

The thing most people hold against him is his mythical h2h weaknesses and his lack of victories against guys who would be today called heavyweights.

 

Ofcourse it's the main reason; had he fought nino instead, he'd have beaten every number 1 contender and that would have significantly improved his standing.

It's not so much anger as angst.

Another shame for his career is that floyd beat moore. Had archie beat patterson rocky's standing would improve moreso.

 

I think the Cockell defence was a try out for Rocky's nose ,injured against Charles in their second fight.
Rocky got a bit of stick for letting Cockell stay around as long as he did , but as he had fought top challengers, I don't think it was anything too heavy.

Are you sure he doesn't have a loss, because I have never heard such a thing. Are you trying to tell me he went 49-0? Really? Wow. You learn something new everyday.

 

Because it is an easy target to use to put Rocky into perspective ... the only man under thirty and over 200 pounds that he fought for his title ... the fact that the hopelessly outclassed Cockell took dozens of Rocky's best shots and took them well before crumbling builds the case against Rocky being able to dominate young, strong bigger men .. Cockell was not one but he was not 37, 39 or a tiny guy like LaStarza ..

 

cockell was better than he looked. He beat lastarza and mathews and was unbeaten as a heavyweight. The marciano fight finished him, don never won another fight so any kudos valdes gets for beating cockell is wiped out in my view. Valdes, aside from being big is SO over rated. He lost to 175 pounders satterfeild, moore, johnson the only name fighter nino actualy beat during marciano's championship was jackson. Remember charles was bear hugged to death and never given a rematch because ezzard still was beating all the guys who beat nino.

 

though Cockell was in with certain defeat, he wasn't a proper HW, but rather a sick man, I always feel that fighters be ranked and rated at their true weight and anything above only enhances their resume.

Don Cockell was a Very Good, lesser great L-HW who showed his worth in some respectful HW outings, and that hows this fight should be seen... because his Pilsbury Dough Boy metabolism is the same thing that killed him relatively young, 54.

Marciano doesn't get anymore kudos here, nor should Cockell lose any!
