This really winds me up. When people ask me my interests at work and such i talk to them about my training and things. As soon as i mention MMA i always get the same response, "Is that cage fighting/The UFC?" Then they ask me questions like, "Can you bite and headbutt?", "What happens if you kill the other person?", "Are you allowed to strangle the other person?"... and many more crazy questions  Do any of you come across this? I try to not let it bother me but these are the same people that are telling me how i shouldn't train "Cage Fighting" as it should be illegal... :yep Lynchburg
most people i have met who doesnt watch mma regularly as they only watch one or two ufc cards each year they think that all mma is ufc. one time i was watching the fedor vs silva in class and the person next to me said ooh you are watching ufc so i said no its strikeforce so he said maybe but they are doing ufc.
My mates tend not to call it cage fighting anymore or they will have to put up with a jovial drunken rant from me
They fight in a cage = cage fighting Most high profile fighters fight for the UFC = ultimate fighting A bit reductive, and the connotations of the first are rather odious while the second just sounds goofy but hardly a hanging offence. I mean its not like there's anything intrisincally right about mixed martial arts* - its use as the sport's name is also an invention of the UFC. * I personally always liked 'freestyle fighting'. I think it captures the essence of what the sport will ultimately become much better.
No always brah... think of Europe and Japan. Most of the time fights are in a ring. :deal For me Mixed Martial Arts is perfect. That is what it is. Freestyle Fighting is not bad but not really true as some systems use headbutts and small limb manipulation which is banned in MMA. Lunchbox
I think increasingly most European promotions use the cage - its really only Japan and M-1 Global that adhere to the ring. The problem I have with MMA is that it sets the sport up as a hybrid sport which eventually it won't be with. Within a generation its going to be a martial art in its own right with people cross-training from a young age and turning professional younger. To me something like 'freestyle fighting' better describes a sport where a fight is allowed to go anywhere. But its a small matter...MMA is fine.
people who dislike mma, and especially politicians who dislike mma, like to call it cage fighting. thats because 'cage fighting' conjures up negative pictures in a non-mma person's mind. cage fighting makes it sound barbaric and cruel. it makes a lot of people think of **** fighting and dog fighting. i used to be guilty about calling it ufc in the past. thats because i was very new to the sport and the ufc was the only one that was on the telly.
Except it's not freestyle at all. That homosexual Werdum was laying around like a ***, a normal person would have kicked the **** outta him. You can't do that though.
The ignorance of society in general is astounding. It's best no to think about as you could possibly go insane.:nut
It wouldn't be surprising for someone who doesn't follow MMA on a regular basis to refer to it as "UFC". 85-90% of anything MMA related that airs on televison (in the US anyway) is either UFC or UFC owned.
