Why do people think Marciano had such a great chin?

Bottom half of the top ten.

It has been a long time since I even tried to compile ratings, and I would have to see what recent fellows have done in more detail. Johnson certainly beat far tougher competition than Bob Foster did.

I cannot believe HEgrant and Peter actually classify Hurricane Jackson as a "hard hitter". That's laughable. Jackson is the furthest thing from a hard hitter.

Here here all this stuff is baloney from people who need to get off this forum - it's a joke these people clearly have no idea what they're talking about whatsoever :lol::lol::patsch - like I said earlier you could start a thread on here arguing that Muhammad Ali's SPEED was over rated and it would probably get 20 pages of people giving revisionist ideas on why they think everyone was wrong about him all along and he was really a lumbering Ox :patsch when people start saying stuff like that - that's when I start losing interest - it's no longer a reasoned debate - it's just a bunch of dicks arguing til they're blue in the face that the sky isn't blue

From what I understand, Marciano wanted to fight once more in 1956, but D'Amato was in no hurry to match Patterson, who had never even fought at heavy, with Marciano. The rest of the division was nothing much other than the still green Machen and Folley. It is interesting that two lightheavies, Moore and Patterson, ended up being matched for the title.

Marciano didn't fight Jackson because they couldn't sell Jackson to the public as a fit opponent. Jackson's fights with Patterson and Machen proved the public right.

I disagree that you are physically at your peak at 25. Especially in the HW division. Most HWs peak physically and mentally around 30. I for one can say from personal experience that I have trained and worked out all of my life extremely hard. Im 34 now and I personally think Id kick the **** out of my 25 year old self. I admit that im a hair slower than I used to be at 25 but at 34 Im miles ahead in terms of strength. I think when a person peaks is determined entirely on a person to person basis.

Interesting. I am 23 and work out probably 6x a week. Do you think I will be much stronger by 33?

ali took flush on the chin shots from liston, frazier, foreman and shavers. all big punchers - alot bigger than moore, walcott, charles - u don't know how marciano would take a full blow from a foreman or shavers but everyone knows it would be the hardest punch rocky ever experienced :D rocky was tough - no doubt on that one.

If you work hard at it, Why not? Ten years of experience and dedication can build a lot of strength, and endurance. Your reflexes may slow with age but your strength doesnt really begin to fade until much later in life (Ive heard some quotes say as late as your 50s). I know several guys in the gym who were physically stronger in their 30s and even 40s than they were in their twenties.

30 certainly isnt a death sentence and neither is forty if you are dedicated. There are plenty of great looking, healthy, strong 30+ and 40+ year olds walking around. The problem is usually in your 30s that drive to workout and that motivation begin to falter and you have to fight every day to get yourself into the gym and throw that same intensity into your workouts that you did at 22. Its a mindset and if you stay dedicated and prepare yourself for that time when you feel that drive, that mental edge, begin to dull you can work past it.

When I was 22 at my best I weighed about 152 (and thats working hard as hell to get up to that weight) standing 5'9" with 3% bodyfat I used to have to work my ass off to get to the point where I could Bench 225 five times. Now, at 34, I weigh between 155 and 160 (depending on my exercise and diet habits) and wouldnt hesitate to lay down on a bench without a warmup and pump out 6 to 8 reps of 225 with no problem.

The only area where Im weaker than I was at 22 is my legs BUT I suffered a knee injury when I was 24 and as a result I can no longer squat or leg press with heavy weights like I used to.

My bodyfat has increased slightly (to between 7 and 10%) which probably accounts for my gain in weight but oddly enough I look better, more full than I did at 22.

Now if only I could get my hair back...

I was much stronger in my 30's than my 20' and still strong in my 40's and smarter but then again I did not burn myself out. If I had to pick a physical prime I would have to say age 35 to 40 If you stay in shape you will get stronger but added muscle usually comes with age unless you do more cardio than the other stuff but good weight is better than less weight as you age. My punch is still at its best but my stamina is less.

I know quite a bit about Johnson. I consider him a top 15 LH ATG. He beat some great fighters in his time.

Perhaps you should read as well instead of lecture. You obviously did not take the time to read the passage SQ incorrectly quoted from , embarrassing yourself.
