Why do people think professional boxers are incapable of being scared?

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Crax Sellerman, May 30, 2010.

  1. There's so many ****ing obvious precedents to disprove this notion that it's god damned ridiculous how many times I hear/see people say it. Training as a professional fighter is not an automatic ticket to see the wizard of oz. Need I remind you?

They idolize the boxers too much to accept that they can be scared shitless.

Couldn't you have posted Tyson- Spinks or something? Tyson is so past it here it's hard to watch. Even though he kicked the **** out of Golota.

I always ask myself that also, no matter how great and tough a boxer is, he is still a human and being scared/fearful is an emotion we all have.

  5. Spinks wasn't necessarily scared, he just got the **** beaten out of him. Golota ran away from the ****ing ring even while people were throwing drinks on him.

Think you'll find Golota fractured his skull in this fight(or more accurately had it fractured by Tyson!)
He knew there was something wrong and refused to fight on.

Even if wasnt that.Golota was utterly crazy and not exactly a good example of a professional boxer!

ehh c'mon man, I'm the biggest Tyson fan and even I'll admit Spinks was scared shitless (but would've gotten starched either way). But I forgot that Golota ran out of the ring. I think he just had a mental breakdown.

saying a fighter is scared (like scared to fight someone) is entirely different than a guy getting "scared" during a fight, IMO

Ever seen a fighter face when a doctor turns up to stitch up a cut? They have just gone toe to toe in a life or death battle ,the doctor turns up with a bit of lignocain ,a needle and thread and they near faint.

I always wished that I threw the slushy on golota that would be so funny to look back on every time I watched it haha. To be able to tell all my friends that was me would be hilarious.

Even the iron men of boxing have mental weaknesses. Sonny Liston scared Floyd Patterson shitless and had the boxing world in awe .But Ali's fearlessness freaked Sonny out and Liston was proven to be an ordinary man.
History repeated itself in Zaire a decade later. Again, Ali, who many thought may be killed, used a superior mental state to defuse the myth of Foremans invincibility.
Roberto Durans head exploded in the Leonard rematch. No one in their wildest dreams would have fathomed a Duran surrender.
Boxing fans witness human nature at it's best...courage, will, and the mastery of a complex martial art. But boxing also exposes the hidden phobias and cowardace that lurk in the hidden crevaces of every humans soul.

Everyone experiences fear. So many people blow that out of proportion and accuse fighters of "ducking" the second a negotiation fails or stalls. That said, there are examples like David Haye in the present day and his flagrant ducking of the Klitschkos for whatever reason.

In this particular incident Golota probably deserves to be shamed but I don't find fear to be a weakness at all times. A man protecting his family out of fear can be even more dangerous than the one doing harm to them. And I'd be the first guy to admit I'm apprehensive about fighting a boxer who's highly suspected of using PEDs. I'm all balls and heart but my skull is neither made of steel nor should I pretend I'm some Hollywood hero. If the other guy ruins my career he gets a slap on the wrist, still receives his paycheck, and could move to Timbuktu to start a new life while I could be in a hospital bed eating dinner with a straw. At some point it isn't considered courage anymore but rather stupidity. Gotta draw the line somewhere.
