Why do people think professional boxers are incapable of being scared?

Everyone gets scared. I like how Teddy Atlas put it after his analysis of the kermit cintron thing.

If you've never wanted to run, then you've never been in the ring. Everyone's taking a beating before.

Fighters are human and get scared. Not all of them, but it happens. What's more important is how they handle the fear. You watch guys like Alex Stewart and Bruce Seldon against Mike Tyson and they were happy to find a soft spot on the canvas. George Foreman said he was scared against Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, and he wiped both guys out in 2. Now I take what George says with a grain of salt, but it's not like that's the only case. Terry Norris said he was "terrified" against John Mugabi and Donald Curry. Look at how those fights turned out. Michael Spinks talked about having fear when he fought and how it helped him. Most of the time he came out victorious, but that fear sure didn't help against Tyson.

I was scared in a lot of my fights, until the bell rang. All the fans yelling and screaming bothered me. Again, once the bell rang, I only seen the opponent and at time the ref.

Of course boxers get scared, it's not like if you take a profession where you have to take risks you're suddenly 'fearless'.
One of my past 'heroes' Herbie Hide looked scared in a lot of his fights while he could simply dispose of his opponents. He also was too scared to follow trough on his punches in his Bowe debacle, while Bowe said afterwards he had never been hit harder. Bowe himself wanted nothing to do with Lewis who stopped him in the Olympics and even gave up his 'undisputed' title for it by trowing away the WBC strap.

And if it isn't even fear to get hit and/or hurt, it can be fear to lose ones status, lifestyle, cashflow etc. when they lose and beïng exposed as not beïng the best.
