I noticed on here today someone saying Williams beat Margarito "easily" and would do it again. I think this chap is suffering a lapse in memory. Here is part of a round-by-round fight review posted the day after the fight: Round seven, the round Margarito said he would knockout Williams. Margarito threw everything but the kitchen at Williams but Williams made it through. Straight rights, uppercuts, hard shots to the body and yet the knockout in round seven was not to be in what was a blistering assault from Margarito in his best round yet. Round eight the fight turned into a brawl and Margarito began to find a home for his right hand more and more. Williams landed good uppercuts of his own but it seemed more and more Margarito was finding the range and landing hard punishing blows. The crowd once again was on its feet. Round nine and Williams didnt seem like he was feeling fine with his hands raised in the corner to get more air. Bu he came with the jab again a and again to start. Big uppercut form Margarito. Two big lefts in a row from Williams. Huge counter right from Williams and Margarito didnt blink. Furious exchanges throughout with both men giving as well as the y got. Williams seemed to win out this round with a few more hard shots down the stretch. Margarito seemed to slow to start the tenth but he came on strong down the stretch attacking Williams body and landing huge uppercuts and hard right hands that seemed to wobble Williams who more and seemed to only have a jab as an answer. Round eleven, and Margarito picked up where he left off , as he continued the assault and strafed Williams with right hands and uppercuts. Seemingly a right hand hurt Williams and Margarito went fro broke and ended up opening a cut over a seemingly fading Williams left eye. Round twelve and both men knew the fight was on the line and Williams wisely boxed on his toes and behind the jab. Both men traded at the bell in a round that he clearly won. Doghouse boxing scored it 7-5 Paul Williams. Judges at ringside scored it 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 for Paul Williams. The crowd scored it for Margarito. If anyone won it was boxing fans as they treated to a great night of pugilism at a high level as well as several fights in the crowd. Beat him "easily"? Clearly not. Margarito was complacent in the first few rounds against a skilled and tricky customer with great physical attributes, and allowed himself to be outworked. The rest of the fight was more or less even, with Margarito coming on strong nearing the end. If it had been a 15 round fight, I have no doubts Margarito would've won, and I have no doubts he won't make the same mistake again and will beat Williams if a rematch happens (which I really hope it does, would be an amazing fight I bet).
it was a tough close fight, margo's slow start didnt help him but williams was on the ball that night,id favour margo slightly in a rematch.
I agree...Easy, no way Williams defo paid the price look at his facial.... That said he slapped his way thru the first round's and defo deserved to get a close decison victory. Margarito blew it.
This was not by any means a 1 sided fight. Margo did start a little late, that was probably the difference in the fight. I do think that Williams is the toughest fight for Margo because he has the work rate and the stamina to fight 12rds. I hope this fight happens, it would be great to see a unification match.
8-4? You must've been suffering from heat exhaustion from one of your lung-bursting attempts at the world 10K record to have thought that.
I'd be surprised if you even had the decency to read the post. I watched this fight live on TV whilst I was on holiday, and whilst it was clear to me that Williams had won the fight, it was in no way "easy". I doubt even Williams himself, a fighter with a big ego, would claim the fight was ever easy. I'm going to rewatch it and score it now.
Both Doug Fischer and Steve Kim scored the fight in favor of Margarito by a round. Most of the media sitting ringside, according to them, scored the fight a draw.
I'm sick of people making excuses or Margo. They say he was coming off a long layoff(Williams' layoff was longer). They say Margo started slow(he's constantly losing early rounds, he i so again on Sat.) How about he ran into a fighter that could take his punches and dish out punishment as well. The threadstarter is talking some bull**** about what would happen in a 15 round fight. Well guess what, there are no more 15 round fights. Ever since that fight team Margo has acted like Williams doesn't exist. They never pushed for a rematch and now they're talking about fighting Judah, Mosley,Hoya, Cotto(again), Mickey Mouse, and everyone else not named Williams.
Fischer and Kim are the two biggest Margo dick ridders on the planet. Their opinion is null and void in concern to this fight.
Williams won the fight. No excuses. But Margarito was coming on stronger as the fight went on. If they fight again, I think that pattern will continue. I hope they do fight again. I don't think either of them are remotely scared of each other. It will happen in time.
Kim is, Fischer picked against Margarito in the Cotto fought and seems fairly impartial. Here are the details:
San Rafael, if the fight goes the distance only 3 people's opinions matter. And all 3 people who's opinion actually counts, scored the fight for Williams. If Margo wants to prove he's the better fighter, he needs to fight Williams again.
They may not be scared of eachother, but one seems to be more willing to get the rematch going than the other.
