Why do people use Compubox as evidence that someone won a fight?

I think in realism , 75% of the time Compubox stats can offer a fair indication of who has won the fight, but not all.... They just tell factual stats..

    You cannott calculate power..
You can't detect aggressive approach by either fighter..
You can't tally up a fighters body language , which is a major indicator as to how a fight is actually going..

That 25% is crucial in a lot of close fights..

Compubox stats are nice to review alongside the real action, but to use as a solid eveident structure of (who won any given fight.) Its really quite a flawed measuring stick.

Good post...I've argued that point many times that Compubox stats can be very misleading. The Calzaghe/Hopkins fight is a perfect example of that. In ineffective slap was counted as a "landed punch" and I laughed when I saw the amount of power punches, compubox had Calzaghe listed as landing. I mean, take Kassim ouma for example. He leans all over his opponent throwing a thousand of these weak arm punches that do no damage to his opponent and yet compubox has him breaking records with his punch output. Bigcat is right though, MOST OF THE TIME, compubox stats can be indicative of who won the fight but not all the time and certainly not with certain fighters.

Compubox numbers give us one factor to consider, but they can be very misleading.

    1) Punches that are effectively parried often get counted.

    2) When a guy rolls with a punch so it has nothing on it, it still gets counted.

    3) Anything that's not a jab gets called a power punch.

These are my main three beefs with compubox numbers. Numbers 1 and 2 are especially bad for guys like Andrade and Pavlik who do not slip many punches, but parry and roll with punches very effectively. Number 3 is just flat misleading; think about it, what you you rather get hit with; a Calzaghe slap, or a jack hammer of a jab from Kessler.

I would not choose to be hit by either a Calzaghe slap or a Kessler jack hammer, in all honesty

Ya, neither would I, but if no ****ing way wasn't an option, I'd take the slap.

yeah thats pretty much what i was going to say..

im sure most people who watch boxing cant judge a fight with their eyes because they dont know what exactly lands and what does..

This is slightly off topic, but when it comes to judgiing fights we watch on TV, I highly recommend a good sound system! I have a Sony Home Theatre with a big ass woofer and 4 other speakers spread around the room. I can HEAR how effective punches are a good deal of the time.

To be fair though, some calls can be marginal. Sometimes I have to watch the replay myself to catch a shot and whether it landed cleanly or not :blood.

My emphasis is on "clean punching".

But sometimes the loud punches might hit glove, or the glove absorbs most of the punch.
