Why do people use Compubox as evidence that someone won a fight?

exactly, its the same thing with boxrec, people for some reason aren't supposed to look up fighters records on boxrec or they dont know anything about boxing

funny how pro boxers such as david haye, floyd mayweather and kelly pavlik have all mentioned visiting boxrec to checkout their future opponents records

i guess they dont know **** about boxing.

I see nothing wrong with it. The judges dont have access to it during the fight, right?

So its just an unofficial stat recording tool. I am more worried about the judges ****ing things up than compubox. Some of the judges who are consistently making bad decisions (melvina lathan) should be banned.

boxrec is a great site, I am glad we have it. I didnt start watching boxing until 2000 so there is a ton of **** I dont know especially about pre 2000 fights. Always interesting to find out the history and who fought who. And then if it is something interesting enough like say I just found out SRL fought Mayweather Sr, I can go and download the fight. I would never know about this stuff or be able to see it without the internet.

Sometimes it doesn't do the fight justice, but sometimes Compubox speaks VOLUMES to the actual outcome of the fight. It really depends on the fighters and how they fight. If a fighter is a busy fighter, but feather fisted and doesnt do damage agasints a more accurate and powerful puncher...you may see a guy with more punches landed looking like he was the one taking most of the punches, when in fact he was just getting cut up but a less active but more crisp or powerful puncher. Most of the time Compubox does the fight justice.

mmm I could find 3 kiddies from my local kindergarden and give them an abacus each and let them score most fights and come with more accurate scoring than those blind mice..

I'd even have Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder score main events in Braille than them fools...........

    :-(

my dad bases a whole fight off of it! you cant do that i think it usually shows a winner but if you miss a fight and see the compubox you really dont know who won..it does not show power of punches who got walked down who got hit more cleanly who threw more combos...so i hate hate hate when people base a win/loss on compubox numbers perfect example is tony thompson threw the most punches ever vs vlad and there is no way he was even close in winning that fight cause he threw weak shots

Compubox does not determine who wins the fight, the judges do (for better or worse). However, it's a good tool for settling arguments.

Looking things up on Boxrec is not the problem.

I visit the site two or three times on an average day.

The problem arises when someone spouts off in a lengthy post, based entirely on a brief visit to BoxRec, without having seen (any or nearly any) of the fights.

I'ts true that a lot of things can be discerned from there, but it can also be misleading, just like compubox.

If anyone watched Compubox, punchstat, or whatever they call it at the Olympics......its no better in professional boxing.....it does'nt do a proper or accurate job period......
It stinks and thats all there is to it.

HBO for example uses it as if it were the gospel.:-(

Its just ridiculous that someone would use it as a measure to judge a fight. The Olympics is the only proof we need as to just how unreliable compubox really is.
It cant even count punches period, much less tell us how effective they are.
If it does'nt work in amatuer boxing in which the intended winner is the fighter who connects with the most punches regardless of its effectiveness, much less in the pro's where the quality of the shot is of more importance than the connect itself.

See my post above for proof that compubox is'nt even good to count punches period......the Olympics is the only proof we need that counting punches through a computer is worse than you or me counting them from just seeing them and memorizing at the end of a round who landed more!

Compubox and the system used at The Olympics are two different things. I do, however, find it interesting that neither the HBO website, Compubox website, nor the Wikipedia entry give any information as to how the punches are counted.

If it were accurate, I'd agree.

    However, it is not.

All it takes is a pair of working eyes (Vegas judges need not apply) and a tape/DVD, and the rewind button to see that it's frequently inaccurate.

There is no such thing as a statistic that can tell you who won a fight. That is a fact.

You can use statistics as a tool and make it part of the equation, but no statistics like Compubox can tell you the outcome of a fight.
