Why do referees press a fighter to continue after an illegal blow?

I think a lot of referee duties are discretionary. They have to make a lot of judgment calls.

Let's face it - the reality is that boxing has a lot of what would be called "floppers" in basketball...guys who exaggerate or even outright fake the pain they express over alleged fouls. If someone gets hit right on the beltline and acts like they got soccer-kicked in the nads the referee has to discourage the blatant attempt to get an unfair rest period as tactfully as he can, by putting intense scrutiny on the fighter and asking "Are you alright? Are you sure? Do you want to go on? OK, take your time (two seconds later) OK, are you ready? You want to fight?".

It can be a way of calling a bluff on guys perceived to be trying to get away with cheeky tactics, and psyche them into knocking it off.

That certainly doesn't go for 100% of cases where the official seems over-anxious to call a resumption of action...but in many cases, I'd wager.

In other words, sometimes they see 'em(the low blows), sometimes they don't.

Most referees have no genitalia and cannot understand why the fighters act like they are in pain.

That is probably true too, but often they are probably in position to see that the person claiming to have been fouled is in fact full of ****.

That about sums it up right there. No referee is going to force a fighter not to take a full 5 minutes, but they are going to run fight with in the rules the way they see fit.

WTF? These are fighters not sissies and it has to be terribly well placed to hurt that bad. Fighters are sucking up serious body and head blows for a living, so unless the suspensor is set wrong and the cheap shot connects with tremendous power, the fight should continue shortly.

Refs urge fighters to suck it up because it's a ****ing fight. What should day say? "Ohhhh poor thing! Does it hurt very bad baby? Should I give'em a massage?"

Same thing here. The rules says 5 minutes. So the fighter should get 5 minutes, nothing less than that!

The five minute rule is there for good reason, but in most cases it simply isnt needed. The ref is doing boxing a favour by not succumbing to a fighter who is trying to get a breather off the back of a low blow. In most cases, split them, go over to the offending fighter and give him a warning or a deduct a point, go back over the fighter who's been hit, ask him if he's alright. So long as his balls arent in his throat, then he's probably suffering more from the head shots he's been receiving than the low blow. Fight.

Dont get me wrong, if it's obvious that a fighter is hurt then he should be given the time to recover, but for the most part that time just isnt needed.
