Why do referees still wipe the gloves now after a KD?

I understand that in years gone by it was to wipe off resin because the fighters wore leather soled boots that had resin on them to improve grip. But now rubber soled boots are used, I am curious as to why the practice of wiping a fighter's gloves after a knockdown still goes on?

Maybe because the gloves touch the dirty canvis, and they dont want that dirt/debris to get in the other fighters eye

Gloves touch the dirty canvas, obviously.

I am sure also that refs determine if the fighter is ok to continue. They usually kind of grab the hands to and look in the fighters eyes. Usually a stoppage on the feet aft a KD occurs when the ref goes for the gloves

It's true that it gives the ref the opportunity to look closely, but it's mostly to remove the grit that might be on the gloves from touching the floor, which could scratch the opponents skin on impact.
