That is a great point and I wonder that myself. Did anyone catch how ESPN totally ignored Paul Williams last night? Joe Tessitore and Nate Campbell were talking about the Judah fight and they were both talking about how Clottey needs to be the guy Margarito fights. What the hell, is everyone trying to ignore Paul Williams in hopes that he goes away?
cause his personality = berto's and berto is younger i guess boxing is putting their faith in berto to be the young, black, outspoken, offensively minded fighter
I might be wrong, and hopefully Berto proves me to be so, but I don't think Berto has what it takes to be an elite WW. I just can't see it.
His chin is weak, he doesn't have exceptional power, he doesn't have exceptional technique, and I think he is a little too cocky about where he actually is in the WW scene. He said after Forbes he will be ready for WW belts, but I don't see it. I can't see him taking out Collazo, Quintana, or Judah.
dont take everything to heart so much man.... hes been dropped once on a flash ko.. it came outa nowhere before & after that point hes been fine his offensive technique is definitely way above par his strength is also above par and hes accurate on his ww position ... if people want to fight him now (clottey) whats wrong with him having a goal of mid late 09 .... i think its fair
He was dropped once because, at least in every fight I've seen of his, he gets cocky and reckless and leaves his hands low. He tries to be a RJJ and he doesn't have all of Roy's abilities. As for taking on the elite WWs, I don't see how anyone he has fought is helping him get ready for the top WWs. Forbes is not going to help him, Cosme isn't either. He should be taking on the likes of Collazo, Lujan, or Cintron. That is the way I see it atleast.
your right about the first comment.. but hes only 24... that kind of discipline comes with practice .. give him some time. and of all the elite welters the youngest are 27 (cotto & pw) so they have a 3 year curve on berto.... i mean he could do 2 fights in 09.. so maybe he takes cintron mid 09.... then clottey late 09... seems feasible to me even though clottey will be a tough cookie to swallow
I expressed that. It's nothing he's shown in the ring. It's swagger or lack ther of when speaking about himself and fielding questions from interviewers. They ask him if he wants to fight Marg or Cotto and he says in a few fights he'll be ready or says that in 2009 it will be his year. Comments like that have me questioning his championship spirit and heart. In the ring he looks very good. He has all the tools he needs to be a champion, but to be an ATG or a future Hall of famer you need a little more than tools. He could just be modest, but he's holding a title. He can't be acting like a prospect when he's got that belt around his waist.
I actually catch that vibe myself. I don't get that Vibe from Paul and Paul has a loss. Berto is still undefeated but it's his demeanor that has me 2nd guessing his ultimate potential.
Berto is very talented and a good fighter but I think Clottley would destroy him. Judah is a good test, but I wouldnt even favor him over Judah...which again...is not a bad thing. Judah is still top 10 material.
You should have seen him before the Quintana I fight in Temeculah, CA. He came out there and some people were yellin "OCHO CINCO!" We was crackin' the **** up!
