Why do so many people think Sergio Martinez isn't worthy of a fight vs. Mayweather?

He hasn't fought there in 5 years.

He is nowhere close to being "more 154 than anything else."

    You are delusional.

Martinez needs to fight GGG, should he win & be able to make 154 then he can fight Floyd september 2014

Maravilla was a JMW who moved up. He's always said he'd be happy at 154, but it does look like his days are numbered at any weight.

FWIW, Murray was probably loitering at the fringes of the 160 top 10, but certainly the Martinez who was a supposed P4Per should have had an easy nights' work with him.

Maravilla has been a great champ, but I don't see more than a couple more fights in him, and his purpose should be to maximise his paydays. The noises re. Cotto suggest that Sergio's thinking of going south, with, potentially a big FMJ fight next year (though I ain't sure how that squares with his HBO relationship).

The consensus now seems to be that GGG is the uncrowned king at 160, though I suspect HBO would be willing to put up a lotta $s to legitamise that with a Maravilla fight. It's one I would love to see, and though a part of me thinks Maravilla has earned a less painful (hopefully) payday or two at 154, one I still hope gets made.

EDIT - sorry I got carried a bit off topic. Thing is, a FMJ - Maravilla fight at 154 could still be made, but, unless Maravilla takes on one of the top guys at JMW and looks something like his old self in winning, it's not a fight that would capture the public imagination the way it might have even a year ago. Similar to a Mayweather - Pac fight, the window has sorta passed. Still, I for one, would still love to see it made.

This fight should of happened on 2011, when Martinez didn't have yet that many fights at MW. Now I think Martinez will be a walking corpse at 154, assuming Floyd CATCHweather wants him at that weight and not at 150. But with Matinez tied up at HBO for 2 more fights and Floyd with Showtime, this fight is impossible to make.

I'd be happy with a 155 catch weight with Martinez middle weight belt on the line. First time someone would have the reach and height advantage on Floyd in a long while. Martinez is not nearly as skilled, but he had good movement and descent speed to make the fight interesting.

I use to think that he would give Mayweather problems but after his last 2 fights you can see his decline. As in matter of fact now I'm even giving Cotto a chance against him

Sergio is finished. done. kaput. Chavez Jr ruined him

He got his butt kicked by Murray who is a nothing but a glorified tomato can

a fight with Mayweather would prove nothing at this point

GGG is where is at, he's the true MW kingpin. why Floyd doesn't fight him?

maybe because it's almost certain that GGG would spank him?

Back when Sergio was healthy, they were saying Sergio was too big for Floyd. Meaning they had doubts Floyd could handle him.

Now that Sergio is injured, they are saying Sergio is past it. Meaning they still have doubts Floyd could handle him, and are hoping their latest excuse will kill a potential fight.

2 years ago I'd want this fight, now no. Sergio's time is over, he's gonna return as a 39 year old with a bum knee.

The hope is sergio can use his size, but sergio is past his best days. Frankly maybe only pacman can compete with him

The Floyd from the Alvarez fight would school current or prime Martinez in similar fashion, if the fight was at 154.

It's irrelevant to me though, because Floyd can't even make 152, let alone 154 or 160. Floyd is a small welterweight. He is very strong for his weight, but by weight and height he is not big enough to be competing any higher than 147. His best weight would be much lower, probably 140 at this point. It's unfair for people to keep expecting him to move up. If people want to fight him, they should move down or up to 147. Floyd has earned his position in boxing, so why should he be the one to move to weights that are uncomfortable for him?
