Why do some boxers make fake sounding noises when they punch?

The fact that most boxers don't go 'HA!!!' when they throw a punch speaks volumes.

Exactly, I did martial arts for a while and was told to make a noise of my own choosing every time I threw a punch...

If it's a choice, it's not a natural physical reaction. It just seemed ridiculous.

And to make a 'HA!!!!' noise twice a second while throwing a rapid flurry seems artificial and would definitely disrupt my breathing.

But there's a minority of fighters who do it so obviously they think there's a benefit to it but I'm still completely unconvinced.

I would say just own it if you're a boxer who has been cursed with below average punching power but I think the best course of action is just to get the hell out of the sport ASAP

You're detestable worthless freaks and you're not only a stain on our beloved sport you're a stain on our entire species just like those disgusting glass-jawed freaks who infest the sport of boxing are

    People are different.

Just spend some time unloading on a bag and after a while you'll develop it too

I have to say, some funny stuff so far RE punch exhaling.
I can say when hitting a heavy bag, when I'm tired and putting a bit of juice on the last punch in a combo, an involuntary 'eurgh' or grunt can come out.
Completely without thought and seemingly at random, a bit like taking in your sleep.

Having said that, people that say rapid-fire 'eh-eh-eh' or 'pah-pah-pah' as they throw jabs and combos should collectively be striped of professional licences and thrown in a ditch.

American amateur system. Some manage to break the habit in the pros, and some don't.

It's annoying AF but you learn to tune it out after a while. If you haven't heard it very often you just haven't watched a lot of American boxers I guess.

I have and I've certainly never made noises like 'HA!!!'.

I grunt which is the natural thing to do.

You don't hear people go 'HA!!!' when they exert themselves physically - they grunt.

I think this must be something fighters have been told to do because it supposedly works and they just do it, leaving their mouths open at the same time (probably not the best idea when fighting).

But then again, I've never heard George Foreman, Earnie Shavers or Mike Tyson go 'HA!!!' when they threw a punch.

Maybe that was their downfall because those guys couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag...

Agree to disagree. Ive been around gyms and heard fighters make lots of different noises as they punch.

    Its just a personal thing.

Ricky Hatton sounded like he was dam near yelling when he punched. Some boxers dont make much noise.

Pacquiao made "ha" type noises too and Im pretty sure he knew what he was doing.,

    Its whatever feels natural.

Using the grunt as a feint is top level. You grunt every time you punch, your opponent gets used to it. You let out a grunt without throwing to make them react, then you whack them with a punch.

Mate that was epic. I finished work that day and was following the round by round updates on the comp. I was scared for Tyson. Then when I saw what he did, I was relieved. Loved it. When I saw in on tv for the first time, **** that was good. He even pointed at him before he did it too. When the ref seperated them. At the time I thought it was because he was saying '' I got you figured out. It's coming '' But just recently I thought maybe it was just smack talk. Regardless, it was great.

The mad ******* tried to break his arm at the end of the round lol. Took like 7 cops to finally get Mike to let go and calm down ****.

    Mad ****.
