Why Do Some Have Duran A Cast Iron Top 10 ATG and Others Have Him 15-20?

This question has puzzled me in the past. Why is there a split in opinion about whether Duran is Top 10 or Top 20.

Duran's critics will point to the DeJesus loss and the losses to the likes of Laing, Sims, etc.

Even with Duran's tremendous achievements should he be knocked down for his losses to inferior opponents when he stepped up in weight.?

How much does peoples preference for different fighting styles come into the argument when considering Duran.

I am looking for evidence based responses.

    Thank you

    It's really quite simple.

The rest of the world has him between 5, and 10 in the ATG's. Yanks think they know better, and rank him accordingly.

The trick is to know that Yanks, and their opinions are worth less than pig****.

foxy's analysis was pretty intelligent but let me do my best to respond on this topic. :)

adding to your points, i think the "no mas" fight could have a big effect on how people rank him. seeing a fighter quit like that in a huge fight is something that some fans will never get out of their minds when they think of duran. having said this, duran at his best was a monster and arguably the greatest lightweight ever.

Almost anyone who rates him out of the top 10 never saw him fight and use Boxrec stats to compile their ratings. As smaller minority did see him fight and felt that his one shortfall was that the could be outboxed. Still others felt that when he lost it usually was a result of him gaining weight and not losing it in a timely fashion as opposed to him being beat by a better fighter. All are valid to some extent, just depends on what weight you want to put on each of these.

But at this best, there were very few fighters to have ever stepped into the ring, who were better in any weight division.

Im sure the No Mas and Duran getting Blown out by Hearns doesnt help his cause but he his without a doubt a top 10 ATG!..In my opinion the best LW ever!

There are a group of knowledgeable boxing people who don't have Duran in their Top 10. It seems small margins separate fighters when it comes to the top of the P4P list as the quality is so high. Any weakness is jumped on.

I think there is also an element of some people preferring slicker defensive fighters as opposed to all out offensive aggressive punchers.

Armstrong and Greb didn't take a step back in general but then their records set them apart. To me Duran has some weaknesses. Some people have Sweetpea ahead of Duran.

It's a bit of an enigma for me personally.

I agree, I though I mentioned that in my second sentence but upon reflection I could have done a better job. Certainly some people prefer a different type of style than Duran fought, which is one reason Mayweather is so popular today. And the 'No Mas" incident is also a valid reason not to put him in the top 10. My view of this is that it basically cancels out the 1st fight, as one was historic in what was achieved and the other was historic in a negative way.

    There you go.

To even be considered as the greatest Lightweight who EVER lived is an achievement within itself. Never mind the rest of his career.

But Yanks will cling on to the " no mas " crap because it suits their agenda.

That agenda usually starts and ends with the totally pathetic, USA,USA,USA screamed at the top of their horrendous voices.

It was common knowledge that as a Lightweight Roberto would " blow up " to anything from 180 to 200 pounds between fights, and people tried to make a big deal about Hatton blowing up to 170.

It is also widely accepted that when he went up to Welter and above Duran would go " partying " and hit as high as 220 pounds when not in training. At 5' 7" with a 67" reach that is not conducive to being in peak condition. Though no one's fault but his own, it does show an attitude of being confident with his capability, as opposed to needing to keep himself in a permanent state of readiness.

That might well have been the cause of his occasional downfalls, when in his " prime "

Basically Duran was never a fitness freak who happened to learn how to box ( like a lot of Yank so called heroes ) rather he was a fighter, who had to go to the trouble of getting himself into a state of fitness.

In fairness, there are tons of Americans who adore Duran and have him well inside the top 10.

In spite of Foxy's brilliant analysis, I believe this is where the debate lies. Most would agree that Duran was a monster, or should we just say any boxing fan that can be taken seriously realizes he was a force to be reckoned with. But your statement that he was arguably the greatest LW ever (and he is certainly in that discussion) is to me where the real debate lies. Most agree on the big 3 @ LW Benny, Gans & Duran (although Duran has multiple weights upon that) in some type of order. It seems to me that those who rate duran 1 @ LW have him a lock for top 10, those who rate him 2nd have him right around 10 or just north/south of that, while those who rate him 3rd seem to be the ones that rate him around 12-15....not sure how many rate him outside of the top 15....that seems like it would be a rarity rather than the norm.
