Rated by the Ring as the best ever lightweight. My no 4 .Definitely a p4p great, rating him in the top ten ATG's is more problematical.

Whats it like living in cloud cuckoo land? Cos if you think that Muricans aren't the most nationalistic creatures in the world, that must be where you reside.

Try looking at the threads on this site. Apart from hanging on to Many Pac, just read the amount of crap non Yank fighters get written about them from Yank fans. Then work out the percentage that goes in the opposite direction.

Here are a few names that come easily to mind when considering Yank nationalistic written garbage.

    Either Klitchko, take your pick
    JCC Sr.
    Lewis
    Morales
    Hatton
    Calzaghe
    Barerra
    and of course Duran

I just can't be bothered to rack my memory for more, but I have no doubt there will be plenty of others.

Your right it is..But I think most people when trying to rank Duran as an ATG automatically think of the LW division first where he obviously marked his territory.

Considering all the fighters that have ever been, in all of history, the difference between being ranked "solid top 10" and "15 - 20" is negligible.
    Minuscule.

His peak ends with Montreal. Only a WW unification with Hearns could have extended it further. Blew hot and cold after DeJesus III, yet produced ridiculous longevity and achievements above 135. Punched out only by Hearns and Joppy, competing 20 pounds above his peak.

Montreal has monstrous P4P ramifications. Though many of the rounds were closely contested, Duran took nine of the first ten, mirroring his dominance of Palomino. The smaller older man won in the trenches, out punching and staggering a rugged and dangerous ATG WW in the process. This is SRL's ONLY defeat at 147, a division he was in position to dominate as long as he cared to after Hearns I, without that torn retina sidetrack.

We don't know exactly how much better Cholo was for DeJesus III than he was for Montreal, but the outcome of that rivalry is why his detractors say he never uncontroversially knocked out a "great" at 135. He did to DeJesus what Arguello did to Escalera, knocked him not just out in the ring, but eventually out of Canastota as well. [Arguello felt very strongly by the way, that the Snake Man belongs in the IBHOF.]

Well, yeah. Age and treachery will always defeat youth and skill, because young is stupid! That's the whole reason Duran leapfrogged 140 entirely. Arcel, Freddie Brown and Duran wanted no part of Pambele, and he wasn't going to gain anything by challenging Mamby, a guy he'd already beaten. They looked at Cervantes, then SRL, and went after the easier and dumber target. [Unfortunately for them, Ray actually learned from his schoolings. Montreal turned SRL into a slimy hag-fish of an operator.]

Because his range is 7-15, 5-13, 8-16, whatever. There have been an enormous amount of sensational fighters. That's it really. I have him at #10, #11 would be no kind of move at all, it would almost have no meaning I have him so close with my #11 Benny Leonard.
