Why do some people refuse to admit certain divisions are weaker than previous eras?

  1. I am in total agreement with the fans who claim that you can not really judge fighters from the very distant past without accurate footage. You can not really just base their mythical skills on newspaper articles and stories.

That being said, the eras which have multiple video footage of fighters from the 70's,80's,90's etc are there for us all to dissect and for us all to easily come to conclusions
I like to bring out a rarely talked about era. The LHW Era of Spinks,Johnson,MSM,Qawi,Mustafa. That 175 era was brilliant and one of the best in LHW history.

If you can't tell the difference between the slugging/brawler Jean Pascal and the brawler Matthew Saad Muhammad, if you cannot tell the difference in skill levels between the great Michael Spinks and the current champion Chad Dawson maybe boxing eludes you and it's time to call it a day.
The skill gap between today's 175 and the 175 of the Spinks era is several levels in difference. Spinks was everything Dawson was 10x, he was just as big, much more powerful, much more skilled, and had incredible ring intelligence. Saad Muhammad would have dominate Cloud into submission in a very painful way and if watching Lopez-Saad II somehow don't convince you of the skill gap between Cloud and Muhammad, watch Cloud-Campillo to better understand.

I don't like to bash the heavyweights of this era so I will not go too deep into it, but if you watch the #3 Alexander Povetkin and watch the #3 in Riddick Bowe. Maybe just maybe you can see a 'small' difference in skill level??

The inside fighting, body work, combinations, accuracy/power of jabs, it's not rocket science to conclude Bowe would have literally starched Povetkin.
I have to think the only reason certain people refuse to admit the superiority of past eras, is of personal agenda/bias.
Not everything is better from before, we all know this. This era have produced some amazing fighters. I don't hear anybody saying Aaron Pyror could have beaten Floyd Mayweather. I don't think anyone is dumb enough to think that Jack Johnson can beat a Lennox Lewis or a Wladimir. Just saying that with the video evidence out there, it should be pretty conclusive in comparing the likes of Spinks-Dawson, Puluv-Holyfield, Povetkin-Bowe, etc

It's hard for people who can't isolate and identify skills to distinguish fighters who win or lose in the context of their own era. A few years ago a lot of people assumed Pacquiao would compete evenly with Duran, as he was racking up wins and stoppages that distinguished him from nearly everyone else within his generation. But his generation and divisional contemporaries are in a different world to that of Duran's in terms of skill and accomplishment.

Not sure about that. #3 Bowe may beat #3 Povetkin, but Wlad would decimate #1 Foreman, and Vitali would deliver one-side beating on #2 McCall.

I laugh when people talk about the huge "advances in medicine, technology, training, etc...."

As said above, watch the LHWs today and then watch the LHWs of 30 years ago. Simply watch their skills. Why could an old geezer like B-Hop beat a much younger champ like Jean Pascal? Because in large part, the actual skills of fighters nowadays are weaker than prior eras.

Watch Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto fight and then compare them to the 3rd, 4th, or 5th best WWs of 20 or 30 years ago. Watch the actual technical skills of Amir Khan and remember that he's one of the top fighters in what is considered one of the best divisions in boxing.

Oh wait, it's "old school bias" LOL

No, it's actually watching fighters fight.

everything you wrote here is pretty subjective and not a fact.
If you watch soccer or hockey teams from 20 years ago they also look more exciting then lot's of modern teams, but modern teams would easily destroy the old timers.

Over the weekend, I played some videos of fights from the 80's for my GF after the SHO Card. It's amazing just how far boxing has actually regressed.

B-hop is using modern nutrition and modern roids, he didn't transfer himself in a time machine, he is actually the product of modern nutrition and steroids. Without the modern sports medicine this geezer(also Holy and Vitaly) would hardly walk at this age, especially after having such a difficult life and boxing carreer.

  9. Go away. You are worthless in life and in everything you say or do. Why make a account to troll? I get it and I know what you are. You are a fanboy of eastern european fighters right? So if anyone even slightly insult or slightly hint with negativity towards that group of fighters you come in with snide remarks and pathetic assessments.

You know nothing about boxing, you are probably a lonely male who's last view at a vagina was when your mom gave birth to you. You are taking out that pathetic real life resume of yours and living through the likes of Wladimir and Vitali, pretending their success is your success, their life is your life, YOUR OPINIONS is their opinions.

People like you are the negative side effects of any sporting forums. Since it give real life overweight virgins the ability to attempt harassment and create conflict among normal human beings.

:huh I actually happen to agree with you. #3 Bowe beats #3 Povetkin but if you think 46yo Foreman can beat Wlad then you are crazy.

    1994:
    1. Foreman
    2. McCall
    3. Bowe

    2011:
    1. Wlad
    2. Vitali
    3. Povetkin

I admit it, some divisions are weaker than previous eras. Now what?

  12. My bad. I apologize Bremen. I was talking about LHW Divisions, I only slipped in 1-2 comments regarding heavyweights. My bad again.

I 100% agree with you. I read your post wrong. Wladimir will crush 1994 easily. I was talking about the guys BELOW k2. We all know K2 will be tough for any era. I'm just saying the competition around them is inferior to the 90's.
Wladimir and Vitali will be champions and competitive in any era. That is common sense. I was making a comparison to Povetkin- Bowe.

I was talking about overall era, not certain years.

K2 Stacks up very very very well against any era. But if we take the top 5-6 of the heavyweight era, after k2 it becomes really bad.

    Example:
Current Era top 5 (estimated) vs 90's top 5.

    Best of this era?
    Wladimir.
    Vitali
Adamek (you have got to say he's third based on resume) but because of h2h abilities I will say David Haye can replace him.
    David Haye

and the fifth can be Eddie Chambers/Povetkin/ (or a number of others)

    vs
overall 90's era. Lewis,Holyfield,Bowe,Tyson, and the fifth can be a variety of guys like Mercer/Ruddock/Tua/ etc.

Wlad vs Lewis is a toss up with Lewis being a slight favorite.
Vitali vs Holyfield is a toss up with Vitali being a slight favorite.
but after that this era collapses.

There is no chance Adamek or Haye can beat Bowe, there is no chance either one can survive that long against 90's Tyson either. Mercer/Ruddock.Tua should be rightfully so slight favorites against Povetkin/Chambers. The list goes on and on and the 90's-early 2000's heavyweights gain more and more of an edge.

I'm just saying after k2, the evidence is there that this era will struggle.
But I digress, I was only pointing out that with video footage you can easily see without much debate who were the better fighters.

Prime vs prime Bowe is a ****ing monster.
Comparing one of the strongest heavyweights ever (in his prime) to a paper belt holder is cherry picking.

you can only be the best in your era.

mythical fights across the history of boxing are just that, mythical.

but its amazing how many people think that

"white robot champ somewhere from the east" = weak era.

"black american HW champ" = epic era.
