Will give him a very good chance of beating prime Joe Louis? I can't see a fighter who could potentially beat a prime Louis then go and get blown out by Sonny Liston. And I'm not asking could Rocky beat either one, im questioning the logic that says Marciano could perhaps beat prime Louis but on the other hand gets blown out by Liston.

And it cannot be a styles thing because both were boxer-punchers and Louis (IMO) was better overall with the style than Liston. And as for punching power, Louis proved his power against modern day sized super heavies who were top contenders. I cannot recall Liston stopping a Wlad Klitchsko sized opponent who was a top 10 contender.

Marciano had a mix of Swarmer and Slugger but people only give Marciano credit for his Swarmer style when in fact he put 100% of his power behind each punch, sounds a bit like a slugger. Thing about a Swarmer is there often in more of a crouch and is trying to wear his opponent down and then KO the other guy.
I couldn't really put slugger into terms into my mind so i turned to good old Wikipedia-
    Brawler
If the out-fighter represents everything classy about boxing, the brawler (also known as the 'slugger', 'hard hitter' or 'one puncher') often stands for everything that's wrong with the sport.
Hmm the bold sounds like Marciano - but yet Sluggers oftne don't have the Stamina to go beyond at most 7 rounds without beginning to lose some edge- examples-George Foreman,Sonny Liston, and I believe Earnie Shavers as well.
So Marciano is hybrid between Slugger and Swarmer because he shows Many Slugger Attributes, and yet has the stance (somewhat) and Stamina of a Swarmer.
Any way getting back to what we were talking about, what they're doing is taking fighters from different periods in their careers and comparing them to Prime marciano, to be honest Prime to Prime I give Marciano a chance with anybody that ever fought, does that mean I think he could win against any fighter no. The reason I give Marciano the edge is because he had unmatched Heart, His stamina gave him the ability to go many many rounds throwing his best punches and taking punishment and still be fresh, and finally his punching power was great and in both hands. He had KO power in either hand.

Liston destroys marciano like a rag doll and George would kill him

The question is though is why you think that if you think he could give prime Louis a tough battle?

That's actually good point. Most people don't see Marciano even be competitive against Liston yet they are undecided between him and Louis. It doesn't make any sense to me.

There's loads of reasons, but the two main ones are that Louis and Marciano aren't the same fighter, and (more importantly) Louis is a lot better than Marciano.

Because Liston is not Louis and took a better punch, he was physically stronger and had a longer reach

But Louis had his share of advantages too.

I don’t think Marciano gets blown away by anyone with the exception of Tyson (Even then it’s not guaranteed). Not even Foreman (maybe would lose but wouldn’t get blown out). That being said Listons a beast and although I’d pick Rocky to win would be a tough fight

I think you misunderstood the question. The question is, why is it generally accepted that Marciano could give prime Louis a tough fight but on the other hand gets blown out vs Liston?

I've never seen anyone favour Rocky over a prime Louis tbh.

I always felt Liston was very similar to Louis, just a little bit behind in every category.

Oh, right. Well Marciano is gonna be walking onto jabs and hasn't got the defence or ring IQ to get past it. And he's then gonna be a sitting duck.

Whereas, on the other hand, Louis was much quicker, had much better foot-work, and was like, I said, was just better. Louis isn't gonna get caught as much by Liston's jab, and he's gonna try and counter it. Marciano can't do that.

    I don't favour either, but I'd say Louis has a 40% chance, to Marciano's 10%, and Louis lasts 8 rather than 3/4.

If Marciano could hypothetically take the punches of a prime Louis for any length of time, I doubt that he falls over dead from the first few shots of Liston. It's up for debate how much harder, if at all, did Liston hit than Louis
