Why do the fighters of this current era fight once or twice a year?

    "Only" 46 fights?

So in the 9 years hes fought 46 fights (47 by the end of the year)which averages at over 5 fights a year, and that includes about 4 years of him fighting at a world title level

Cause they are pussies who don't care about the fans, or the sport, and don't like to fight. It's just a business to guys like Mayweather, Ward, etc. But you can't keep real warriors out of the ring.

Roberto Duran and Julio Cesar Chavez both had about 120 bouts in the modern boxing era. Harold Brazier had 127. Monzon had 100. Alexis Arguello had 97. Pongsaklek Wonjongkam has 97 and isn't even retired, though he's from the Thai tradition where 300 fights is still normal for a career. James Toney has 90, I think. Saul Alvarez had about fifty by the time he was 20.

Thai's fight huge numbers of fights but are rarely actually any good

Also I think people are looking back with rose tinted glasses.

    Joe Frazier fought 37 fights
    Leonard fought 40 fights
    McGuigan fought 35 fights

Not every guy was a 100 fight warrior pre 1990

Frazier only had 37 fights but he fought some of the best heavyweights of the era and fought his heart out against the likes of Muhammed Ali, Jerry Quarry, George Foreman, Joe Bugner and Jimmy Ellis. From 1968 to 1976 he fought 2 or 3 times a year and that includes 3 wars with Ali, a fight of the year bout with Quarry and 2 noble but failed attempts against George Foreman. Maybe not alot of fights but good quality opposition along the way. Sure money was a consideration but so was pride and the desire to prove that you were the best. When I see what goes on today I get very discouraged. Mayweather and Manny P. avoided each other like the plague. It's a damn shame. Floyd makes 20 million to fight a hand picked opponent once every year or year and a half. It's a business, nothing more today.

The huge money has spoiled them, they are also afraid of losing, so they play the time game............fighters should fight no less than 3 or 4 times per year at least................if they are like Wilder and fight only winos from the alley, then they should fight once per month...........

Taxes......the less they fight per year the less they pay. Taxes are the reason Pacman fought Rios in China. To avoid paying U. S. taxes.

I think money plays a large part but not because fighters want these large prices to fight. TV channels such as HBO, PBC, and Showtime all have a budget per year. Majority of this budget goes towards the major players. An example would be Canelo with HBO, he has two specific dates reserved and HBO has to make sure to have money set aside for these fights.

Promoters, politics, and contracts are why. Fighter A might have to the result of signed matches between fighter B, vs C, with a " mandatory " before getting a shot, and even then the winner might duck him.

    Boxing has no one commissioner.

We all want fighter's to make a buck, to be looked after, but not if it creates stagnant divisions where you don't have to prove you're the man and instead just claim you are during fabled twitter wars.

Too much money, too much privilege, too much thanking soulless networks.

The way fights used to be made was by throwing your hat into a ring - a simple gesture of self belief. Today we are constantly forwarded to promoters.

To his credit, Golovkin. He's a very active guy. (even though I'm highly critical of him)
