Wlad, lennox, valuev, fury(downed by a cruiser), bowe (was KOd in the amateurs and never fought a real puncher closest thing was golota and he had him on ***** Street with single punches), David price, Joshua, wilder etc.. So what's that about? Are their lanky bodies not built to absorb the impact of punches?
Your examples are ****. Nobody knocked out Valuev, Fury, or Bowe. But the answer is that most heavyweights aren't awesome fighters. They have one thing going for them and that's size. It's a rare enough thing for a guy to be that tall, so most of the guys who make up heavyweight don't have chins, speed, stamina, or any kind of real athleticism or aptitude for the sport. The lower down you go, the more those things become important and the more complete fighters you find as a result. At heavyweight, you pretty much just have to make the weight and be able to punch. Also, everyone that big hits hard. When a 230 pound man hits you it hurts, whoever it is; so we see a lot of knockouts at that weight.
Lennox Lewis wore some solid shots from Tua, wasn't happy about it but didn't go down. A lot more people folded than not against those kinds of shots.
Well it helps when at training, you got somebody swinging a baseball bat at Lewis head while he just blocks it with a right hand ear muff. Lewis told Tua all he had was a left hook and a bad haircut and in their fight, Tua showed up with a left hook and a bad haircut. Bad chins? like anything to do with the human body, its just your natural physical make up.
Nearly anytime someone cleanly hit him in the head he was stunned or wobbled. His height merely prevented most shots from having more of an effect since you have to punch upwards so much.
Their height works against them, I think. Bob Fitzsimmons called it over a century ago - "the bigger they are, the hard they fall." Sure, there are exceptions - but I think once you clip one of these big boys square on the mandible, they're hitting the deck, and in many cases - Lewis is a notable example - they're not getting up.
There is a lot of athleticism in the heavyweight division so that is BS It may not be the same ballerina like foot work of some midget smaller than an 8 yo girl but I guarantee that the likes of Wilder and AJ would slaughter any of these world class midgets in a 40 yard dash, smash them at jumping both high jump and long jump, throw a shot put 10x as far as well as lift 10x the amount they can lift. Speed, power and explosiveness is most peoples definition of athleticism Balance, agility, dexterity and finesse are also on the spectrum of athleticism but further down the list and that is where midgets have advantages Heavyweight's have real power and speed that midgets don't have so obviously there is less room for error at the highest level. Midgets can punch each other all day and not scratch each other, that isn't a chin thing they just can't punch for ****.
Many taller, lanky boxers have very thin necks. Not massive becks like Tyson or Holyfield had. I'm thinking guys like Wilder simply lack the neck muscles to absorb massive shocks; therefore their heads just fly back without much resistance. Check Vitali Klitschko (solid neck muscle) vs. an NBA player like Lamar Odom: http://www.boxinginsider.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/PT24934.jpg Wilder is closer to Odom physically than Klitschko, hence the low punch resistance.
Insane thread. Vitali has an argument for Goat chin, Valuev for top ten atg chin, Fury, Joshua and Wilder jury still out on. Even Wlad for all his earlier career trouble went longer without a kd than any other champ in history. Joke thread.
Listen denier - it is those of you who deny the existence of glass jaws that are the joke. Your blind hero-worship of some of these tall fighters just can't seem to let you accept that they seem to have, on average, less punch resistance than shorter fighters. MANY shorter HWs also have glass jaws, this is true (Tommy Morrison is a good example of this) - but these tall guys don't seem to have, generally speaking, particularly good ability to absorb punches. Take a look at David Price. Wilder too, as the only reason he hasn't been starched yet is he faces nothing but cab drivers and janitors - and even some of these stiffs have had him on the canvas!!
