Why do up and comers only fight a couple of times a year now?

So many potential superstars only fight between 2 and 4 times a year.

Why? it takes them ages to build up.

Karim Mayfield was a big prospect but hasnt fought since May, and many more.

Mike Tyson showd the world how to do it. Fight once a month for the 1st 2 years, to rack up 24 fights? WHy don't fighters do this anymore.

Surely only the super fighters can afford to fight once a year.

Are they paying out prospects too much, pr are there not enough tv dates to fight on?

Any examples of recent fighters that have fought ore than 5 times in a year?

    Whats happening

Not enough TV dates, or actual shows.

    Same in the UK.

Can they not just fight at random events to get experience?

Tyson Fury is quite active but doesn't fight 5 times a year.

It's all about TV exposure though, the promoters are just thinking money. A couple years ago in the UK, the amount of shows being put on outside the big promoters was silly, they were very scarce. A number of promoters have stepped it up a little now, so more tv dates, more untelevised shows, etc. But the prospects will have all their shows televised just for the exposure and future money potential.

It's not so much, how much experience can we get this prospect to reach his potential, more like, how much money can we make off him, and how we are going to continue making money off him.

I think Tyson fought that often because it helped keep him away from the amount of trouble had he got in without regular training camps and going to the gym. Might be wrong though

That and he dispatched of people real fast was notoriously hard to hit meaning he didn't take on board much damage which meant his body didn't need as long to recover.

The sport is not like before.

A prospect's career path is carefully mapped out, the selection for next opponent is too stringent (record and ability should be sufficient and look respectable but skill set is just enough to make it competitive but still not enough to win and in turn make the prospect look good) plus the next outing needs to be ensured that the prospect is 100% in shape etc.

Bottomline, with boxing becoming more of a business than sport, it actually starts to hurt the essence of the sport. Managers know that tv networks will showcase fighters with sparkling records and nothing less. And a single loss on a televised card can tarnish the image of a fighter hence affecting marketability.

Gone are the days when boxers learn their craft as though 4 and 6 rounders are amateur bouts and they fight almost every week.

By the time those old-timers are in the 10 rounders, they have practically mastered all the tricks in the book.

He is not talking about accomplished superstars, he is talking about prospects, up and comers, new to the pro's. There are not enough tv dates for them to go out regularly, and there are not enough shows being put on for them to fight as regularly as they would probably like. Definitely in the UK anyway.
