I'm not a particulary aggressive person, I've never been in any trouble, had a charmed childhood. Often question what draws me to it.

    Why do you do it?

I'm more interested in hearing from people that aren't ex-cons, general hard cases etc.

    I fight because

    1. I love the challenge myself in training everyday, and my opponent when i fight
    2. I like the respect i share with fighters win loose or draw.
    3. I enjoy physical activity and pushing myself
    4. I like collecting belts
    5. I was born with a desire to fight, i think its human nature (or at least men's nature) to fight, in a gym I can do this in a friendly environment where respect and encouragement is mutual.

Same here, it's the competition side of it, wanting to test myself, find out how good I am, the glory, the focus it gives me and the thrill etc.

Totally agree, well put. My mate reckons all men should be encouraged to do some kind of fighting sport as it's lets out our aggression, particulary for him sat in an office on a 9-5. It really makes him feel better.

There are alot of reason but one that immediately jumps to mind is this: There is nowhere to hide in a boxing ring. And i dont mean so much physically as i do emotionally and mentally.

You have your regular hard cases as you said, yeah im tough i can do this i can do that, but once your in the ring and its happening for real, someone is really hitting you, braking in your ribs and smashing your face and then all of a sudden it hits you, that this is really it. Its this that reveals who you are and what your really made of.

It doesnt matter if its HBO PPV with the world watching or just your first spar at your local gym, the ring is always the same place.

As i said no where to hide. From others and more importantly, yourself. Everything is revealed in the ring.

    For me...

Conquering natural instincts i.e. remaining calm despite the world being thrown at you
Having to think around problems you face in the ring
Knowing that the tattoo'd guy who goes round smashing people in bars has just been pummelled by you
    Improving everytime I spar/fight
Exercising one of the most technical sports there is
Proving to myself and others that there is more to me than you first see

Well put, I once asked a 60 year old in my old gym what made him take up the training and even a bit of sparring, was it just for fitness? He said no, more than that, you can't kid yourself in the boxing gym and that was one big reason why he went, interesting.

To be the best. I know pretty much everyone says that, but all that stuff about testing yourself isn't me. Yeah it's nice to see where I'm at, but winning is my main objective.
