Shamefully, i first became aware of boxing through the Rocky movies. Started to become interested in British fighters. Now, i watch it because i love it (No homo???). No other words for it.
No shame in that. A lot of people became aware of boxing because of Nintendo's Mike Tyson's Punch Out game.
i got into boxing when naz, bruno and eubank where kicking ass. i watch it now because it is the one sport where anyone can feasible win with just one action. in football if leeds score a goal vs barcelona, they still have time to equalise. in boxing if harrison lands a huge shot flush on haye and knocks him out. there is noe equalising. the fight is over. it is the ultimate underdog sport.
I started watch boxing around 84/85 i think. I allways liked boxing because its one against one contact sport! Teamsports never really have the same excitement and entertainment imo. Very simple
After watching corrales vs castillo 1 i was MESMERIZED i ran to my friends at school telling them about it, nobody had even watched the fight. Boxing to me was a mysterious sport that i wanted to delve into, my brother boxed and i followed him to the gym on the weekends, i loved every part of it, THE SOUND OF THE GYM was beautiful, and i felt like KING KONG compared to other kids my age because i was just better than them My fam moved out, and the "finchley boxing gym" was now like an hour trek away and so i started training in MMA gyms doing muay thai competatively. But boxing is the greatest sport on earth, the history it has is also so humbling. For example if youre a massive football (soccer) fan you watch games every weekend, but nobody watches any of the games that happened a few years ago. In boxing you learn and pick up so many things from old school fighters and you start to appreciate the sport even more
I started watching boxing casually in 2005 at the age of 13. I wad drawn into it having watched the boxing at the Olympics and I'll be honest, in that sense it was probably Khan who got me into boxing. Mainly because his success meant that he put boxing back on terrestrial TV so I could watch it. Having watched his early fights, the first Contender Series was also shown over here and contributed to me gaining an interest in boxing. I saw Calzaghe's fights against Bika and Manfredo on TV aswell, and it was around that time I started to try and learn more about overseas boxing and try to increase my depth of knowledge in sport. I'd say that when I signed up here in late '07, that was when I became a hardcore fan but completely lacked the knowledge. I'd still never seen the likes of Pacquiao or Mayweather fight at this point, and I didn't post until a few months in '08 as I didn't have any knowledge to base my thoughts and opinions on, so I continued to read here, watch fights and read up on boxers and get myself clued up, so I'd say in that respect, early '08 was when I became a true fight fan in terms of being hooked on the sport and also knowing a little bit about it.
Its the whole gladiator comparison...the appeal of one on one and no one to help you...your physical strength, conditioning and skills against another and with no one to rely on but yourself....to test the limits of your body and mental strength to try and take out another person with the same mindset as yourself is what makes the sport great...is is a chess match of your power and skill vs anther mans power and skill.
I love the ability aspect of boxing. How all the attributes of a fighter culminate on one night and go head to head against his opponent's. The mental game, the physical game, the natural ability and the training in the gym. I love that a veteran fighter will be better than a green fighter even if physically the greener fighter is better. I also love that a green fighter can overcome a veteran by imposing his athleticism on him. That balance is something that I find amazing. I love that if a fighter is not up to par, he cannot rely on teammates to come to his help. It's one on one and there's no turning back. I don't really care too much about the "ass kicking" part of the sport. For me, the "performance" part is what matters.
I still watch boxing because there is always a chance to tune into a great fight. I don't watch it nearly as often as I used to, but I'll catch it if nothing else is on. I keep up with all of the recent news and results, and watch fights that matter on youtube or something if i miss them. I watch a lot more MMA and K-1 than boxing, but A great fight is a great fight no matter what, and boxing still has plenty of them to give.
