Why does a Tommy Hearns knock people out, but not Paul Williams?

Hey lets not get too caught up in the semantics of boxing power:yep Williams isnt Hearns and thats the end of the argument. The kid is a streak of ****.I dont know "How" he makes 147 anyway.Bear in mind he turned pro as a middleweight and dropped down 2 weight dvisions. It wont be long though before his back up at a higher weight.Theres no way a man who is the same height as me can make 47 for a long time.Im surprised he hasnt seen adverse effects on his health at such a low weight.

I believe wide shoulders give a harder/faster punch from an engineering point of wiew.

Punching power is usually generated by rotating your hips and transalting this motion to the shoulders by stiffening the torso. Assuming that the speed of this motion is constant, wider shoulders give faster arm extension, thus the harder punch.

The freak factor of Mr.Hearns comes from having such broad shoulders and long arms combined with slim enough torso and legs to fight at welterweight.

I am not an engineer, so if I am wrong, please shoot me down...

Williams doesn't seem to settle in on his punches as much as Tommy Hearns did. With practice - Williams can become sharper and stronger - but he will never punch like Tommy Hearns. The Hitman was one of a kind.

I know people talk about builds, shoulder width, leverage and such like but in reality you can get short armed chunky guys with awesome power (marciano, tyson etc.) as well as tall guys like hearns. You will also get guys with all the muscles, speed and leverage in the world who cant punch for snot compared to hearns. (malignaggi, baldomir, willams, etc.)
Punching hard is a very specific skill and needs good genetics, skill, technique and hard work. 99 % of the poulation will never be able to run the 100m in under 11 seconds no matter what their build or how they train, and the same goes for being a tommy hearns type puncher...

You can't grade a puncher on what you see, a great puncher has the propensity and skills in their makeup, and Tommy was gifted and developed that talent to a point.. Paul just isn't a natural puncher..

Its like saying .. why isn't clifford Couser the best heavyweight in the world.. He looks like Mike Tyson, but its a half ass Tyson wanabee.....

A major problem for Williams, is he chooses to fight inside. If he stayed on the outside and punched at the end of his arms, there would be more power behind his blows.

Yes his techniques are slightly off.. He smothers his best work, punchers with long levers should allow them selves room to bang....

this is why he trains cintron and andy lee. both tall guys, wide shoulders, with natural power. while most power occurs this way, naturally, i think form can definitely be tought.

I dont know where Pwils power is. when i watch him i dont see him twisting his torso too much, he throws mostly from the shoulders, which could be a problem. Someone said something about his KO ration being high... that is because he is able to overwhelm guys with his volume of punchs, it has nothing to do with power. If Pwil can develop even good, not great, power, and keep at 147, he would rule the division. As of now, i think guys can get use to his high volume of powder puff punches after a few rounds and will get in there. i think marg took too long to realize this.

my sparring partner when i boxed at fairburn house was a mate of mine called lionel anderson, came from kingston about 2 years before.

    we boxed lightweight.

he was 6.3 and his bloody arms were so long he could make a cup of tea while still in the living room.

no legs/tiny waist/lats like bruce lee and there was me more a jon thaxton type build , with my to big headguard only seeing his head once and a while.

Some of it is genetics, some of it is Tommy really threw that right hand with perfect timing and really sat down on it.

Williams just kinda puts his out there.
