People used to criticize Wlad for being boring but since retiring he has ascended to deity standard. Can you imagine Wlad bending his knees, leaning down with his hands low swinging away with Ruiz? Joshua's jab is poor, I noticed it Vs Parker that it's just a flicking tapping jab with nothing on it Joshua should have hit ruiz with 20 hard jabs a round for 5-6 rounds then when his face is swollen, his eyes are closing up, his nose is bleeding and hes tired, THEN you start looking to finish He put ruiz down with a great combination and Ruiz WAS hurt, albeit not ready to go just yet. But AJ showed he had the power to do the job if he could be disciplined. Ruiz had slower feet and less range than Joshua but Joshua chose to give ground and give ruiz his only way into the fight.
It's not his style to jab, he liked to get close like Tyson and get into a heated affair. He never learned to adopt the jab as a defensive style in times of need.
Well maybe it's time to adopt it. He's not Mike Tyson and fighting like him when you are 6'6" is folly Luckily for AJ the jab is the most simple shot in boxing so he may be able to develop a decent one.
God knows how long it would take him to adapt... if it is even possible at his stage. He is so ingrained into his style, he relishes his own style, admires yet, takes comfort in it.... until he met Ruiz Jr of course. The jab is a state of mind, it is a defensive mentality... it is not just learning to throw it correctly, it is understanding why you throw it. Dillian probably doesn;t have the most perfect technique on his jab, but he knows exactly how to use the jab correctly. And he does it well. AJ does not have that state of mind to be using the jab, in the defensive... he hasn't evolved like Dillian to need it, because AJ was Dillians Ruiz. The jab is the most fundamental part of boxing, it is so important.
Time will tell, at the end of the day wladimir got banjo'd by a worse fighter than ruiz In purrity, then again by brewster, then again by sanders, then got dropped 4 times by the statuesque Sam Peter, before he turned his career around. It's about whether or not AJ can swallow a bit of pride and acknowledge his flaws. If he can he has a CHANCE of becoming the next wlad/Lewis If not he will be the next amir khan
I'd never put him in the same bracket as Amir Khan, AJ is a far higher calibre fighter. But yes if he works on a few things including the jab, he can rise to the top. He needs more flexibility, more fluidity, more mobility. Anyways, he is a permanently changed man after yesterday. If it was a random TKO, then he would have learned nothing. But to get beat down systematically at his own game... means he has had a life defining moment.
Blimey, he's nowhere near Lennox, Wlad or Khan's level! Never will be. He's 30 now and still a limited stiffster who doesn't know what to do in many situations.
AJ has a very small fraction of the boxthing skills of Mr Amir Khan - the only serious attribute lacking on Khan's side was the Glass Section above the neck. Apart from bodybuilder generated power, Tony Dosh PPV really is not that good at boxthing.
I was thinking the same.. I mean AJ for his size and reach advantage his jab seems to be getting worse each fight, he was flicking it from down his hip keeping the left low.. He doesnt stand tall too with the jab and not controlling his range properly too.. Usually good big HW use the jab vs smaller guys as a range keep and keep the smaller guy at bay, Wald and Lewis used to do that very well.. AJ was gassing after 3rds and seems to be getting slower every fight, was a very strange and messy performance from him.. Regarding people comparing Khan to AJ.. Khan in his prime was technically more sound than AJ and hand speed alone Khan was special.. Also Khan only British fighter since Lewis who built his name in the U.S something AJ failed on his debut and he is soon 30 years old Khan went over there at aged just 22 and won at the garden..
