Why does boxing not have a standardized ring size?

    Anyone think it's a bit silly the size of the ring can be changed based on negotiations and requests from the A side? Imagine an NFL or NBA team dictating the field/court size to gain an advantage over their opponent? Even in a 1 on 1 sport like Tennis it'd make no sense.

    Standardizing by weight class might make sense, with higher weight classes getting bigger rings and the smaller one the smaller rings.

    Because it's a tool used to protect the house fighter and **** the little guy in the ass. Joshua tried it multiple times with Usyk, but all he received was a bruised head from Usyk.

    Because boxing's traditional base is small hall shows. Guys could pick up rings from wrestling promotions, from folded boxing halls or they could put one together themselves. It's hard to do any of these things if you have to have an exact ring size.

    Even today, if you said "this ring size only" you would have two major problems, first all the guys with rings of another side who say "**** you" of which there would be hundreds and hundreds and hundreds, world over, then you'd have the guys who fork out for a new one at 10k.

    Finally, you prevent people walking in and opening up a defunct promotion using their equipment, not a huge problem, but would cost boxing a great deal on a long enough timeline.

    I think ring size is open to negotiation between 2 fighters. That's why it's not standardized.

    Yeah but the negotiations rarely tend be fair, the A side almost always seems to get their choice to the detriment of their opponent. It just seem antithetical to the idea of even playing fields in competition.

    Has a fight never materialized due to ring size not being agreed upon? I can't think of one off the top of my head.

    the ring should be small enough that the fighters must engage and yet just large enough to allow SOME movement. honestly, RUNNING is not a defense!

    If you had a standard ring size per weight you couldn't have heavyweights on the same card as lightweights.

    If I am the B side, and I have a relatively low chance of winning, I would happily agree to the ring size my opponent demands, for some extra bucks.

    Maybe that's happening but not made public. Why do negotiations take so long? Lots of terms in contracts probably and ring size may be one of them.

    In 99% of cases, the dispute over the size of the ring is a cover for a debate over money. The number of promotions across the country that have a multitude of different size rings is pretty minimal.
