Why does Calzaghe think he has enough stature to claim that "boxing is a dying sport"?

This guy is a total joke.

He fights a bunch of bums his whole career while he waits to fight two true legends like Hopkins and Jones while they are on the downside of their careers.

Calzaghe needs to realize his place in history, and that is as an average boxer who did not have enough guts to fight tougher competition while he was a young man.

    Calzaghe is a bum.

I am NO Calzaghe fan but phillyups is being extremely harsh.

Joe fought some good fighters on his way up and during his reign.

It's only recently that he has fought an elite fighter (Hopkins) a very good young contender that had name recognition (Lacy) and a "name/former elite fighter" (Jones).

Calzaghe has accomplished quite a bit but he should keep his mouth shut.

Boxing is doing great globally and we don't need him at all. Maybe Europe needs him, but not the whole of the boxing world.

he is neither a bum or an average boxer, clearly. Just to make you look small il give some quotes from sugar ray leonard...

"He would have held his own against all the greats I fought, like Marvin Hagler and Thomas Hearns. And he would hold his own with the others like Bernard Hopkins.
"He has the talent and heart and will be the undisputed champion."

I can see why you say I am being harsh, but I think you mis-stated a couple things.

1.) Hopkins may be an elite fighter...but he was 44 years old !!!
2.) Lacey may have name recognition, but his is a bum...a complete bum.
3.) And your comment on Jones proves my point...he is a FORMER elite fighter who was washed up and part-time when Calzaghe fought him.

If all Joe can do is point to those three wins, then he truly is just an Average Joe that will fade into the dustbin of history.

He beat the ring champion at light heavy going up a weight, has an unbeaten record, has beaten a young gun in lacy who has never been the same fighter since, and beat a dangerous guy in the unbeaten kessler.
Then comes back and beats rjj who was rebuilding a career, and who many americans thought would beat joe.
Lets not forget joe has been fighting for the last 6/7years with brittle hands he is now 37 years old not in his prime at all and still remains unbeaten.

And you call him average, you dont know a thing about boxing lol

Just read comments by sugar ray leonard, george foreman, boxing fans like stlvester stallone, robert di niro, al pacino
Boxing writers like bert sugar etc and you will see he is far from average:patsch

Joe won't be remembered like Hopkins and Jones will be remembered. They are top 40 fighters of all time and Joe is barely top 100.

    I didn't mis-state anything.

Hopkins IS an elite fighter and Joe had a close fight with him. They are both elite fighters.

No Americans that call themselves hardcore fight fans thought Jones would win.

We don't pick American fighters to win everytime.

I don't care what writers or former boxers say about Calzaghe.

He has three (3) major wins:

    1.) 44 year-old Hopkins
    2.) Always over-rated Lacy
    3.) Part-time, washed-up Jones.

If those 3 fights are at the top of his resume, he is average in an historical context
