    Hey MR, how's it going?

I agree with you completely, If Joe went through Jones' resume just as Jones did, such as going up to HW then coming straight back down and fighting Tarver 3 times and Johnson, he'd have picked up a number of losses for sure.

Whilst it's a fair point that Joe never faced a top southpaw, how many were champions in his division? Or was he mandated to fight? Or was there public demand for? Dawson was around at the end, but whilst I respect Chad as a top fighter, he still can't sell out a village hall, there was little money in that fight. Joe would have had a tough and close fight with Reggie Johnson and Tarver for sure though, but I think Tarver would have had serious issues with Joe's work rate and stamina, Tarver liked to fight in spurts and Joe would force the fight for 12 rounds. In a trilogy Joe, Tarver would win one.

Yeah, on ability Jones is top 10 all time for sure, but on resume does he make the top 30? Joe didn't have the same ability, but he was a great fighter still, but his resume doesn't match up to his ability either, I think he would have won the Super Six though, he just came about in a weak era of SMW's. I watched a couple of Dariusz fights recently, he was a very good fighter, with devastating power, but Jones would tamed him and won a wide decision no problem in my opinion. Nigel Benn would have been a tougher fight though, I think he had the style and power and speed to really scare Jones, would have been a firefight!

    Much better than you
Surely you can do better than that?

They asked him how much he wanted to fight in Wales and he said 3m. He wanted 3m after deductions, not before deductions.
They could never have offered him 3m. Neither him or Calzaghe were draws.
If 3m was on the table it would of then got split between him, King , ****** and Calzaghe.

Jones-Benn would have been insane... Such a shame that fight didn't get made.. Dariuz I think Roy would beat too, it is just that having those 2 elite punchers on Jones' resume would eliminate a lot of doubt by some that Roy could go 12 with someone who had just as much power or more than himself. I have never made my own ATG list, I start arguing with myself before I can get a top 10, but I have seen lists that have Jones anywhere from 25 to 45 that I wouldn't strongly dispute with. But that is the shame, I believe he had the skill to be one of the very best.

Joe as well, I would have loved to see him move up to LHW earlier, I think he would have had success there and got in the mix with Tarver, Jones, and DM... Even if you win some and lose some, you can say you moved up and fought the best..

Imagine if Leonard, Duran, Hearns, and Hagler never fought each other? Some of those outcomes would have been hard to predict, and they were some of the best fights all time.. All of those guys are better for those fights, it made them legends..

I wish Calzaghe and Jones had a little more of that in them, and not so risk vs reward minded... I guess its easier said than done, boxing is a business...

I've never been involved in the professional side of the boxing. So what's your experience in the professional side of the game? I hope you have some, because you realise how silly you'll look if you say none.

    No source? Pathetic.

And that's still not nearly as much as he would have gotten to face Calzaghe :oops::patsch

But hey, whatever suits your agenda Zod :yep

Skysports show things like yachting and indoor bowls yet wouldn't air Calzaghe fights because of the low viewing figures.

So there was a time when Calzaghe was not even that popular in the UK and what fans he did have were losing interest due to the poor quality of both his opponents and performences. This is something that a lot of Calzaghe fans conveniently over look, which is especially hilarious when they claim that fighters like Jones and Hopkins were ducking him.

Although I suspect many of these people just jumped on the Calzaghe bandwagon after the Lacy fight and did not follow Calzaghe's career during the dark days.

Calzaghe acted like a baboon in the Jones fight and also couldn't drop him despite his so called "glass chin"

    Great post

Even though Benn wasn't the greatest, I think he would have given Jones his toughest fight. The Dark Destroyer had speed, power and reckless aggression that would make Jones think twice before every move. I would favour Roy to knock him out, but give Benn a good chance at pulling off the upset. Dariusz is too conventional and predictable to beat Roy, I like unorthodox fighters and think Roy would take this one by wide decision (Darius had a granite chin)

I'd be hopeless at trying to make an ATG list! I can't rank fighters I've never seen footage of, so I wouldn't try to make one. But anyone can see Jones is easily one of the most gifted fighters ever, but his resume doesn't quite match up either.

I agree with you on Joe moving up to LHW, Glen Johnson actually pulled out of a fight with Joe in 2004 to fight Roy Jones instead, which was a great move as the Jones win made him a big name, and got him fights with Tarver as well.

Great fighters need great rivals, Toney was a very good fighter but he quickly went downhill after leaving the MW division, and Jones beat him so decisively that there was no need for a rematch. Hopkins priced himself out of a rematch with Jones, and Jones was too late to fight the names like Mccallum, Nunn and Kalumbay at MW.

Though the sport would be a lot better if the likes of Roy and Joe would have been less averse to risk, and made concessions to make the bigger fights. Two of my favourite fighters today in Mayweather and Pacquiao should have fought years ago! But then you have to appreciate the risks that fighters take, it is all about business

Haven't spoken to you for ages. What's with all of this Martinez vs Chavez rematch nonsense?

Hi mate, I'm good thanks, been unwell this week so I've had to give football a miss this afternoon, which leaves me trapped inside with little do! :patsch How have you been?

Bob Arum is a smart guy isn't he? Chavez had a 20 second spell in the 12th round, and now Bob is trying to use it to sell a rematch to make millions and cash out on Chavez! The problem for Sergio is, he's too small for 168, too big for the likes of Mayweather, Cotto and Pacquiao, and there's no other big money fights at MW. So if he wants a payday, he might have no other choice than to rematch Chavez

I'm in contact with people who work in the biz like Thomas Hauser Not to mention following the careers of guys like King and Bill Cayton
    Im quoting your own post:lol:
    Here we go again.
He agreed to the terms, but turned it down when he realised the money was going to get split between himself, King amd his opponents
    http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Boxing:+Calzaghe+v+Hopkins+hits+a+snag.-a090149779

Neither Hopkins or Calzaghe were draws back in 2003. Calzaghe wouldn't even get paid over 500k until the end of 2004.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/7568158.stm

Hopkins wasn't a draw, which is why Showtime would of only paid 500k for his fight with Daniels:
    http://www.secondsout.com/columns/thomas-hauser/the-96-4-purse-split1

The most Showtime would pay for any fight is 2m
    http://www.secondsout.com/columns/thomas-hauser/hbo-2008

The most Showtime were willing to pay for Tarver-Calzaghe was 1m:
    http://www.walesonline.co.uk/sports...-s-having-a-laugh-says-******-91466-14484775/

    Lets do the maths:
    Hopkins:3m
Calzaghe would of wanted the same amount seeing as how he was the defending champion:3m
    Showtime: 2m

Where on earth was ****** going to get another 4m from and still turn a profit?

There is no way Jones-Benn would have went 12... Someone would get sparked.. I would favor Roy, but you never know... What we do know, is it would probably be one of the greatest 168 fights ever.. and would be talked about for years to come. Just the styles of the two, speed and power combination, you know Benn would have come right at him, and Roy would of had no choice to make it a battle of firepower...

I know both of these guys respected each other, but were also both a little reluctant in my opinion, because they both knew what that fight would be.. I know they both stated on numerous occasions that they wanted to fight each other.. i also know Don King was involved, and that isn't always the best thing.

Really wish this fight would have been made, I don't really know who to blame.

I think his performances against the likes of Starie and Thornberry played a massive role in that as well.
Even Showtime had to be unhappy with his quality of opposition. Larkin should never have allowed him to fight those guys. I dont think it was a coincidence that Showtime would sack him after Calzaghe's contract ran out either
    True
Who had he beaten to make those guys wary of him? Starie? Reid?

    Your most probably right:good

Their styles would have made for a great fight! Jones was a devastating puncher at 168 just like Benn, someone was going down. I just think Jones is more skilled, faster and had the much better defence, which is why he would win.

I agree, Benn knew he would have taken severe punishment against Jones, and respected him a great deal. I think the blame lies somewhere between Don King and Roy Jones. But also, Benn was finished after the McClellan fight, which meant the window of opportunity was much smaller, Jones would have destroyed the post McClellan shot version of Benn.

How do you think Roy Jones-G-Man would have played out?
