Ive heard from numerous posters around everytime in a fantasy matchup with liston in it, they bring up that godamm marty marshall kd or the first loss to degrade his chin/ability or what not.

lets take a look at the 3 fights

1st fight listons 8th pro fight: Liston knocks marshall down(nearly out). Marshall somehow gets up and starts clowning around. Liston is controlling the fight easily winning in the 4th round, when marshall screams out and liston starts to laugh out loud at this # 7 rated lightheavyweight contender and gets caught with a punch that breaks his jaw. liston fights with excrutiating pain for the next 4 rounds losing a very close split decision that could have gone either way.

"I was told to take it easy for a couple rounds. Marshall's a clown. they told me, Who'd bounce around and flick punches from all sides. I was standing there, kinda wondering, when all of a sudden he lets out a yell, and with my mouth wide open, gaping, he slugged me right in the jaw. it didn't hurt, but I couldn't close my mouth. I had to fight the last 4 rounds with my mouth open. After a while it hurt bad."- Sonny Liston

"He's tough. thats one thing nobody can deny about that man. He hurts when he breathes on you."- Marty Marshall

Rematch Listons 9th pro fight: Listons knocks marshall down 4 times in 6 rounds knocking marshall out in the 6th round. marshall floors liston for a flash 1 count.

"Im sorry to this day about knocking him down. Man, Am I sorry. He hit me after that like-nobody should be hit like that. I think about it now and I hurt. He came out after me in the fifth round. He hit me with a right hand on my ear. It didnt knock me out, and it didnt knock me down, but it hurt so much I just had to go down anyway. The next round he knocked me down 3 times. He hit me in the stomach with a left hand in the sixth. That wasnt a knockdown either. It couldnt be. I was paralysed. I just couldnt move, I couldnt move enough to fall down. that was it."- Marty Marshall

Note: while some may point to liston being knocked down as a bad mark against his chin, i disagree. Liston was caught by an off balance shot and only his glove touched to the canvas for a flash 1 count. Its not like liston was physically knocked down. In larry holmes 8th pro fight, novice Kevin Issacs floored and hurt badly larry holmes. Before you try to say larry holmes had not fully grown into his physical maturity, NEITHER had liston!

3rd fight: Liston wins every second of every round in a one sided shutout 10 round decision. Marshall ran away, he did not want to feel the pain of listons blows ever again.

"I just knew I couldn't let him touch me this time"- Marty Marshall

I see the fight as a more one-sided win for Marshall than you do but I think this speaks FOR Liston's heart rather than against him overall - 4 rounds with a broken jaw is no ****ing joke. Marshall was a good fighter if not a great one, and as you've pointed out, this loss in no shame - even if Liston hadn't had his jaw broken in nearly exactly the circumstances you describe.

This is a very interesting line, isn't it? WHo is telling Liston to take it easy, you know, and why?

That's my favourite quote on Liston, the part about Liston landing a paralysing blow. Fair play to Marshall for getting in with him over and over again.

Good post over all SQ - Marshall is a good fighter and Liston basically dominated him very early in his career.

it was a split decision loss, a very close one. liston had won the first 3 rounds going away knocking marshall down in the 1st, before the punch in the 4th. how was it one sided? wheres ur source?

My understanding is that he was beaten on points, I've never heard that it could go have gone the other way before.

The last time Marshall fought Liston, Sonny was scheduled to fight Harold Johnson. That would have been interesting.

Not only did he knock him down and broke his jaw, but he also said Liston had bad breath? Talk about adding insult to injury!

You don't usually post on here when you've been drinking.

How do you think a young Sonny Liston would have done with Harold JOhnson?

As far as I'm concerned Liston's chin was checked ,and passed the test with flying colours , in those two slugfests with Williams. The Big Cat might not have been a great fighter ,but he was a good fast boxer with terrific power .

i think we should immediately get a petition to get all of liston's losses reversed! and his knockdowns, knockouts and broken jaws!

One of our fellow posters said Liston had knocked Marshall down, and
was on all fours barking like a dog, .....Liston starts laughing, then
Marshall jumps up and hits Liston and breaks his jaw.

I like that version..whether it is true or not.

Something similar could happen like that out on the parking
    lots here in Texas.

I could be wrong here, and I'm sure some of you know, but in the autobiography about Sonny Liston, "The Devil and Sonny Liston," by Nick Tosches, don't they hint in it that Liston took a dive in the Marshall fight? I used to have the book but no longer do, and a quick google search didn't show up with anything. I seem to remember this being hinted at though.

EDIT: I guess if he broke his jaw it would most likely NOT be a fix, however I did find something that said :

Liston lost his eighth fight on a split decision when the wisecracking Marty Marshall made him laugh and, catching Sonny with his mouth open, broke his jaw. (Source:The Case for Sonny Liston By: Charles Farrell)

I would take Johnson by comfortable decision. However, from what i've read, Summerlin, the man won both of his fights according to most experts, but wasn't given the verdict (hence the rematch). Don't underestimate the power of the mob...
