Why does fighting off the backfoot mean you are controlling the fight?

Wow. Some people only see what they want to see.

I saw GGG look like Chavez. Putting on pressure, with limited output, and landing his jab all night. Jacobs was running all around the ring, no time to breath, single shots totally ineffective, while occassionally landing a punch when he throw a multi punch combination, which would at time penetrate GGG's defense.

Meanwhile, GGG's pressure is clearly making Jacobs work harder than he has to, and Jacobs obviously was in great shape, but he certainly was not controlling the pace of the fight. Just because you go forward, doesn't mean you're not controlling the fight.

At what point did GGG have a lapse in his defense or look desperate? Honestly, the only times Jacobs really had success is when he threw damn near 8 punches in succession and one or two would land, but that's 8 damn punches.

It was a close fight, but GGG was controlling it with his jab. The way some people want to score gives people no incentive to pressure fight. You might as well just watch two guys looking each other.

They really need a computer to do the scoring from now on and get rid of judges. Computers would be far more accurate, especially if there is way to measure the power of the punch.

 

I boxed amateur for years. I know loads of amateur judges and saw fights go past count back. If the fight is still tied after count back it goes to the judges who will then pick a criteria by those categories. I will read this link you have posted to see what it says, my guess is it's probably a load of crap. Anyway the fights after count back were always judged by lead, style then defense.

 

Well said. I scored the fight 117-110 Golovkin. I could only stretch it to 115-112 being generous to Jacobs in the close rounds. The level of stupidity amongst those claiming Jacobs won reminds me of the post Bradley Pacquiao 1 fight where some were seriously saying Bradley deserved to win.

 

Mayweather/Hopkins/Ward/Lara/Rigondeaux fans think that offensive come forward fighters are primitive brawlers, and won't concede that offense takes as much or more skill as defense. Furthermore, they don't acknowledge any type of defense besides running and clinching. They seem to think that Roman Gonzalez is a face first slugger who just gets hit with everything anyone throws, and won't acknowledge his amazing guard plus the way he picks shots off with gloves and forearms. If the punch doesn't miss you entirely it's considered a good punch in these circles. Blocking and deflecting doesn't count anymore.

 

I've always wondered what would have happened if half the fighters who fought mayweater just refused to come forward and just stood centre ring waiting for HIM to attack. I'm surprised noone tried it as it's clear he is the best ever run/hugger and pot shotter in the business. Unless it was in the contract.

 

And inside fighting is anathema. You aren't supposed to fight at any range except for long distance to minimize any chance of getting hit and taking damage.
