The documentary shows otherwise.

He had the ability to do so aswell because Frazier was backed by a group of rich white business men from Philadelphia.

He turned black America against Frazier and it's evident because the nation was divided. Like it says in the documentary, for the majority, if you were black and working class, you would support Ali. If you were white and middle/upper class, you would back Frazier.

It's also evident by the way he was sent death threats because they felt like he betrayed the black race, as a direct result of Ali's 'Peeping Tom' comments.

 

I didn't say it, Frazier said it. I just repeated what Frazier said. To tell you the truth, I didn't understand what your post meant. Couldn't understand it. I don't understand those weird looking faces so many on this forum puts in their words.

Oh yeah he did, having Ali call you a Tom, in that era of American politics was about as bad as it could get for a black man, I do think Frazier taking joy in Ali's current state of Health is quite sick though.

 

During their trilogy, Ali called Frazier an Uncle Tom and a bunch of other racial insults. As a result, Frazier was getting death threats that people were going to kill his family and blow up his house. His kids were being beat up at school and would come home crying. If I were Frazier, I would have wanted to destroy Ali as Frazier wanted to as well.

 

I get you and I'm sure the majority of us, including me, would feel the same as Fraizer does today if we were placed in his shoes :good

 

The correct answer here. Ali is/was truly a walking piece of ****.

Worse yet, instead of owning up to his douchebaggery, he and his buddies (Angelo Dundee, Dick Shaap, Bill Clayton) tried to downplay it, and make it sound as if Ali was just "playing around," and making Frazier look like a jerk who can't take a few light-hearted jokes. And the liberal wing of the media, whose own agenda coincides with what Ali's "stand" was decades ago, has chosen to perpetuate this bull****.

Frazier has been wronged on so many levels.

Not that I don`t like Ali. As someone on here stated, Frazier helped out Ali in exile quite a bit... But, what i think really got `Smokin` Joe. Was Ali turning the blacks against Frazier. Frazier was a proud, stron young black man. Very proud of who he was, and where he came from. Ali made him out to be an ignorant, shuffling white man`s Uncle Tom. Completely NOT who Joe was. Making fun of (in an extremely cruel fashion)Frazier`s blackness, nose and lips. Was torturous to Joe.Frazier`s kids got picked on in school because of how Ali depicted Frazier. I think Ali was way over the top with his treatment of Frazier. Frazier, never forgot it...

 

The whole bit with the gorilla doll during the pre-fight promotion for the "Thrilla in Manilla" encapsulates the kind of trash talking that many found to be funny and clever. Frazier, being the object of Ali's derision, never appreciated this humor and remains bitter about it even today.

 

Thanks. I am not as hardcore fan as most of you. It was the first time I even got a hint of their rivalry with that documentary. The "gorilla" comment was the first I heard about it and not only it was tacky, it was just plain sick. I don't buy one bit that Ali meant that for "promoting the fight".

 

he called him a gorilla, and on several occasions made reference to Joe as a lower hominid. Joe is a cool man, but Ali was way out of line.
