Why does Jones get so badly OUTCLASSED when he loses??

This is the second time we've seen this happen to him. He doesn't just get outworked or out-staminaed, it isn't just that his chin lets him down. The guy gets outright OUTCLASSED. He gets beaten to the jab, he gets blocked and countered, and gets outboxed from the center of the ring and outskilled on the inside.

I know he's nearing 40 now, but Calzaghe is only a couple of years behind. But even disregarding this fight, we saw almost the exact same pattern against Johnson several years earlier, at a time when Roy had been rated higher on P4P lists than ever before just a couple of fights earlier, and he was a major favorite to beat Johnson. Not only that, but Johnson was the same age as Roy and had been through the mill far more than Roy had. Johnson didn't simply knock him out, he actually outskilled him by a mile long before the KO punch landed. It's not that Roy didn't have what it took to beat him, he actually didn't know what to do against him. I've never seen another fighter get outclassed like that by Glen Johnson, no matter what their status at the time, before or since. The way Roy lost was totally inexcusable IMO, and he hasn't done jack to push for a rematch, or barely even spoken of it.

For a guy that so many people think was one of the best fighters ever, something just isn't right about the way he loses. At the same stages in their career, guys like Hopkins, Mosley, DeLaHoya, Winky, Casamayor, etc. have still been making interesting/competitive fights. They're not totally dumbfounded by anything they see, and they at least try to make adjustments, even if they lose decisively in the end. To me, Casamayor has been "shot" for far longer than Roy has, and yet still found a way to pull out his fight with Katsidis and gave Marquez (one of the most skilled fighters in the sport) a close fight until his aged legs gave out.

In a way, Roy reminds me of Tyson. He looks awesome when he wins or he gets crushed when he loses, but there isn't much in between.

Jones dominated boxing for 15 years with pure athleticism. He never had great boxing skills to fall back on.

Because Roy is NOT a determined fighter, and he caves in mentally when things aren't going his way.

He in essence, gives up and stops trying to win, merely going through the motions without giving it his best effort.

Ever since Tarver decked him, he has been afraid to take risks!

The only time I really remember Roy digging down deep was in rounds 11 & 12 of the first Tarver fight.

But Jones's problems have mostly been MENTAL!

His reflexes and speed are surely diminished some, but he's still fast as ****, super agile, and has a lot of pop in his punches when he commits.

In conclusion, he gets outclassed because he folds mentally when things don't go his way.

But he still posseses super athleticism!

    It's all mental with Jones.

No one outclassed him pre-Antonio Tarver. And the first Tarver-Jones fight was pretty close as a counter-example. He gets outclassed now though, because among other things, he's lost the spring in his legs.

I'd hardly say he was crushed. A lot of people, including the BBC, had him winning the first half of the fight until he gassed.

The man has been shot since 2003, what's so complicated to see?

:huh I'm scratching my head over this too?

Why does Jones get badly outclassed when he loses? The better question is why does Jones lose - because he is shot, and has been for ages.

I think it's partly mental, you can actually see him flinch now, but you can't discount the toll the years have taken. I went back and watched some his old fights today and the difference in the legs was glaringly apparent. He used to bounce right out of the corner when trapped and throw lighting fast counters. Now it's like he's stuck in the mud.

No he hasn't, he was the top P4P rated fighter in the world in 2003 and his position at the top was more solid than it ever was. No one was claiming he was "shot" when they made him an 8-1 favorite to beat Johnson easily.

He was past his peak, yes, but NOT shot. Certainly, he was nowhere close to what Casamayor is now, and Casa isn't getting outclassed the way Roy was by Johnson, even when he loses.

Jones is my boy, but he needs to hang it up after tonight. Prime Jones would have stopped Calzaghe tonight. He had an opportunity to stop Cal tonight, but lack the killer instinct he use to have.

Casamayor and RJJ arent the same type of fighter. RJ has always relied on speed and would constantly make the same mistake. His athleticism would get him out of trouble like in 2001 when he would go into the ropes against Gonzalez yet he would fight his way out of it. He goes into the ropes but that cost him in the Johnson, Tarver III, and Calzaghe fights.

Casamayor has always been a crafty boxer that relied on dirty tricks. He would always find a way to rough his opponents with 'dirty' boxing like rabbit punching, holding, low blows and what not. Coincidentally, these tricks help a veteran fighter vs a novice boxer.
