I'm not having a go at you but I'm really astounded at the Calzaghe fans on here gloating over this win. It was an embarasing joke of a fight that should not have been made - everyone said that before the fight.

I think it's a combination of some reflex erosion, and mental issues. I don't mean mental issues as in Roy's dumb or unstable (he's neither), but ever since the first Tarver fight he doesn't trust himself to completely open up because he doesn't want to get countered, and that's why he'll hesitate a fraction of a second too long before he throws- at a championship level, that's too much.

Physically, Roy is still a superb athlete (down from near superhuman levels) and would enjoy that advantage against most other fighters. His mental block is what's the more damaging of the two if I had to put priority on it.

Well this is ESB and there are people who 'hate' Calzaghe and that goads a lot of people into bigging Calzaghe up. Just the way internet boards are, unfortunately.

And yes I am a Calzaghe fan, but I am a fan of boxing first. And also quite sane, might I add!

I don't think that the fight was quite as bad as you seem to think, some of the work that Jones did could have actually beaten quite a few LHW's. Could Chad Dawson have taken that viscious uppercut from Jones (mid-rounds, was a slo-mo highlight)? Could he have recovered from that?

Of course Jones is shot, especially considering his prime was so amazing. But, having rewatched the fight, I think that Jones was actually 'decent', I don't think it was quite an "embarassing joke" of a fight.

I think it was 75/25 in favour of Joe.

well, calzaghe saw what was in front of him and just dominated but the worst was tarver III. jones was reluctant as ever. he just came to survive in that fight

Roy simply should of retired, this fight should of NEVER happened. These old fighters (who are rich) keep hanging around, and it was a meaningless fight. Calzaghe could of fought Dawson or Pavlik, instead.

Stop with the Jones is only a few years older then Calzaghe ****. Jones is badly shot and didnt care of himself right he bulked up 20 pounds of pure muscle and burned it all off in his mid 30s which was one of the stupidest things a man can do. Calzaghe was smart he just continued to bust his ass at that same weight class all his career and theres wheres some longevity can come from ala Hopkins. Guys who do what Jones did or do other things like go up 40 pounds inbetween fights this more often then not slows guys down. Go look at a Calzaghe fight from 7 years ago and theres hardly any difference look at Jones fights now then guy cant even move his legs its like hes wearing 50 pound boots.

Oh bull****. Watch Tarver-Jones I, or even Jones-Hanshaw. The man's just ****ing old and doesn't have the physical gifts he used to. He may not have a ton of mental toughness (mostly because he never needed to develop it), but he's not some candyass pushover either.

It wasn't "stupid" the other times a light-heavyweight champ bulked up to 190-200 pounds to fight at heavyweight, and then came back down. Why should it be stupid for Roy?

No one was claiming it was "stupid" when Roy did it either, when he was an 8-1 favorite to beat both Tarver and Johnson afterward.

Who are these mysterious "most fighters" you refer to who went up in weight like that ONCE (and only ONCE) and then came back down, and were "ruined" for the whole rest of their career?

Jones has no Chin and no heart.

He was probably used to all of the handpicked fighters not trying to fight back.

Jones has been gunshy and afraid to throw punches ever since Tarver. Hence why Johnson was able to steamroll him. You think Glen was the first fighter who ever had the gameplan to put pressure on him?
