Why does Pascual Perez’s paper thin resume continue to get a pass?

To clarify, you’re telling me that Dommy Ursua was rated at Flyweight before facing Perez?

I quite like this thread. There's generally two sides of the Perez-argument, and McGrain is doing a good job holding the fort for his. But TBH I agree with Bujia, Perez's résumé is paper thin for someone with his status, and I always find stacked résumés as the most important part of evaluating greatness. Although I do think he beat a crop of fighters which were much, much better than say, Lopez's competition.

I tend to agree that Perez shouldn't really be rated top five, but going undefeated for like 60 fights, beating the second most ranked fighters of any flyweight, being lineal (twice, right?) and showing an amazing skillset overall means I wouldn't argue profusely with any placement.

I actually asked McGrain quite a similar question in the Survey thread, and these were the ranked fighters he named:

Sadoa Yaoita (1), Dommy Ursua (5), Ramon Arias (1), Young Martin (2), Dai Dower (2), Oscar Suarez (7), Espinosa (2), Danny Kid (3), Yoshio Shirai (ch.).

I was quite impressed by some of those guys.

I don't know. It would require diligence and hard work to uncover such facts. But that's the type of work that is required before you start trying to summarise a great careers in single sweeps.

I've explained what he's got going for him and the reasons why he would rank above Kingpetch are the same.

It's pretty clear you've decided to die on this hill so I'll leave you to it.

What if it turned out that Lopez had beaten 10? Or 12? Nobody doubts that he beat the best men available, after all. Same as Perez. Would you hold him in higher esteem knowing the men he beat were mostly ranked?
