why does Philly have such a long history of lethal left hookers?

Is it because of the way they were trained; or because of the luck of the draw, Philly gyms attracted an inordinate amount of murderous punching southpaws?

Probably the latter then the first. The stereotyping becomes self perpetuating I would imagine.

I agree with Red (never thought I would say that!), a self perpetuating myth... Yes, there are some serious hookers that come from Philly....but I would be surprised if it was a disproportionate ammount comprable to other places.

I always felt that we had more slicksters & boxer punchers than what we have a rep for.

Which left hookers were your favorites, PP?

One sweet lightweight left hooker, Len Matthews, that I thought surely would be the next SRR, fizzled. Do you remember him?

I have seen a brief clip of Matthews being taken apart by a young Carlos Ortiz, who went into Len's home turf to stop him when both were up-and-comers.

I tend to agree with the others. I know of more smart-boxing types out of Philly than left-hookers.

Judging by the beating I saw in that one-minute clip, I would imagine it would be the undoing of many good fighters. That was one of the more horrific poundings I've seen.

Ya, the ref could have stopped it like 20 punches earlier. It could have been a tragic ending had he let the fight go a bit longer.

Reminded me of Ike Williams beat down on Beau Jack, where Ike looked to the ref to stop it, DM
