martinez should be fine. and all this manny talk seems to indicate that some forget that there is precedent for this that doesnt involve manny. odlh made a sitting mw champ come down to a catchweight to fight him. of course, the incentive for hops was his biggest pay day at the time...either way it didnt work out too well for oscar.
No big deal. Its not like Maravilla had to starve himself to make 154. At 154, 157, or 160 Martinez whips that ass. This time I will be there live to see it!!!!!!
**** not even that Leonard made Lalonde come down so he could win two belts at once. And that's just the example that springs to my mind. Yet Leonard is universally considered within top 20 ATG and many have him in top 10.
:? What? Really. I like both guys, but I thought the majority would of thought Williams because of his size and that blitz he did of that 160lber nobody he would fit the bill of kicking ass at MW, not Martinez. I think most would agree Sergio's domination of Pavlik was due more to styles, but Sergio I think is more of a natural 154lbr than Williams is, but it might also be because Martinez really is that good and is a real threat to anyone 147-160. Kinda like Manny not being a natural WW, but he's good enough to beat anyone 140-154. I'm sure he'd be the favorite other than Floyd in those fights.
**** Manny and **** Floyd. This is a far better fight than either of those resume-padding clowns are having, so keep them out of this thread. It's like a ****ing cancer ...
Whitaker/Chavez was a catchweight too. People make it seem like Manny invented catchweights when they have been around even before he was born. A thread was made on catchweights I'll try to dig it up and post on it.
To answer the actual question ... My guess is that it's got more to do with the fact that Williams hopes to keep his options open on WW / 151-esque catchweights. I have my doubts he can get down there, but he still claims he can.
If you never knew, I don't like the idea of aging fighters only doing it once a year. Now you know, genius.
Catch weights are nothing new in boxing. However, I will second anyone's notion that Pacquiao's recent success has something to do with it. Catchweights are weak, but at the same time, Sergio wants a 50-50 purse and Williams wants to win again. I'll pick a close Williams UD.
