We've all noticed that the vast majority of his power comes from his arms/hips - but why does he do this? Surely there must be a logical reason. Is it to keep a safe distance between himself and faster fighters so he isn't left open? Is it his sheer size? I remember someone telling me his body is such that he is prone to injury, and putting his whole body behind punches would make him more susceptible to getting hurt. But is this likely? Is he now fast enough to go all in with a punch and not get hit himself? If he was so confident in his chin, then wouldn't he take the risk? I'm a bit of a boxing novice and was just wondering. I like his style but it can be frustrating at times, you can see there's more power there he just doesn't seem willing to use it.
Less dedication to the punch... Yet still effective and annoying for the opponent. Within 3 rounds of getting hit with that annoying ass jab your nose is bleeding and your feeling demotivated in trying to connect on him.
he peppers u with it. after while it gets annoying because its evitable. his connect rate is incredible
he does it more than ever now than he did in his prime so i think the injuries have something to do with it well he always kind of pawed with his left to begin with but he rarely arm punches with his right he puts plenty behind the right when he sets i do think the arm punches have more power than people give him credit for if you check back at his Danny Williams fight he drops Williams with a very awkward and very short left hook
Well, he fights with his hands down, for starters. And his mode of defence is to maximise the use of his height by leaning back away from punches. His feet/legs are important for this, seeing as though his body is as stiff as a lamp post. And it doesn't help that his feet/legs aren't that mobile to begin with. So, to maintain all of that, he has to resort to awkward looking arm-punches that don't have punch weight behind them.
then maybe you should give him a tip, he would appreciate an advice from a boxing genius like yourself.
Because the last time he sat down on a punch and threw it with conviction he nearly got knocked out. RIP Corrie Sanders.
Because he's very naturally heavy handed. His arm punches hurt more than they appear to. They mark guys up and discourage them and slow them down. It allows him to conserve energy while dictating the pace without overcommiting himself.
Pretty much this. The key is that it is effective for him. Not many fighters could pull this off. Luckily, Vitali has the size to do it.
