Is Orlando Canizales the most underrated and forgotten boxer? This guy had amazing footwork and was essentially the Lomachenko of his generation but nobody talks about him...

Orlando is one of my all time favorites. He gets talked about more in the Classic section. Certainly a skilled and beautiful fighter to watch though. His competition has a lot to be desired, especially for a HOF fighter. There's plenty other fighters that have been overlooked and severely underrated that also deserve to be in the HOF.

When I first saw Lomachenko using the angles I immediately thought about Canizales.

He used to be talked about plenty on the Classic Section here. He wouldn't talked about much in this General Forum, because boxing acumen when it comes to historical greats is severely lacking in this section, save for a handful of posters.

I would not say he's one of the most underrated boxers though. He's in the HOF, and at one point in the mid-90s Ring Mag had him ranked as high as #3 P4P. That's pretty impressive considering that his overall resume is VERY disappointing.

There's a whole laundry list of guys in history more underrated than Canizales, because they're not in the HOF and deserve to be.

Very pleasing fighter to watch his performance vs Kelvin Seabrooks was amazing, his angles and footwork were second to none aswell.

Unfortunately though his opposition was very weak.

He had a gorgeous short lateral movement that he could engage right in front of an opponent, stepping left or right to open up new angles and giving him control over his planes of attack. An enhancement to this was the technical acumen that allowed him to develop one of the most complete body attacks of the late 80s and 90s; but he was also a sharpshooter who was capable of landing short punches with both fists to the head of all but the most elusive fighters. A withering left uppercut completed an arsenal as exhaustive as any at the poundage. Throw in elite stamina, workrate and an iron chin and you have a lethal fighter who very nearly lived up to comparisons with Roberto Duran, made, not least, by Gil Clancy.

But he is not, and never has been underrated. He was overrated.

At no time did he match the world’s best. During Orlando’s time at the top, the most significant bantamweights in the world were Raul Perez, Israel Contreras, Jorge Julio, Yasuei Yakushiji and Junior Jones. Canizales didn’t bother to match any of them; in fact, he never matched anybody ranked in The Ring top five bantamweights for the entirety of his reign and almost certainly never met a fighter better than Seabrooks, who he took the title from. Second among his opponents was likely Billy Hardy, ranked #10, who gave him a torrid time with an accurate jab in England in 1990. I see Canizales picked over guys who would have butchered Hardy in one round - Canizales took a narrow decision in a fight that could have gone either way, before knocking out the Englishman in a rematch staged in the US.

Orlando sacrificed his career to the IBF. He fought who the IBF told him to fight, which was a miserable, miserable waste of his talents. That's why people don't talk about him more.

Orlando Canizales' older brother Gaby Canizales is far more underrated, and he has a better resume IMO. Orlando hasn't beaten anyone as good as Miguel Lora, whom Gaby KO'd in emphatic fashion.

Speaking of Miguel Lora, he's a far more underrated fighter than Orlando as well.

I actually thought Hardy beat Canizales, one thing I will give Canizales he was very good in rematches. But really the question is why is Canizales needing two fights to beat Billy Hardy convincingly ?

I agree with you i think hes overrated just like Khaosai Galaxy is. Galaxy is rated top 50 best fighter of all time yet his opposition was pretty weak aswell and never unfied.

Don't get me wrong though I really enjoy watching Canizales, probably one of my most favourite fighters to watch at his best so pleasing on the eye. But it's a shame we never see him fight a real elite fighter.

He did eventually face Junior Jones, albeit after Jones suffered brief career setback with 2 KO losses. Jones' victory over Canizales showed that he was still a good fighter, just marred with bad chin and stamina.

Had Orlando manage to beat Jones we could have seen a match between him and Marco Antonio Barrera. That would have been a great passing of the torch fight.

Yup. Great post. And I LIKE Canizales as a fighter. Superb and fun to watch. But shouldn't be considered an ATG.

He also beat 29-0 Richie Sandoval who's probably better than mostly anyone Orlando beat, Sandoval upset the great Jeff Chandler.

Speaking of Canizales/Sandoval that fight is one of the hardest fights to watch, I've only ever been able to watch it once. Poor old Sandoval took a frightful beating and I believe he got damaged in the fight aswell ?

He did, his competition actually got a good deal better post-prime and post-bantamweight, but results were immediately mixed.

He looked like a mini Duran when he beat up Sandoval. But apparently Sandoval was severely weight drained and had no business fighting around that weight. From all that punishment he took from Canizales it's a miracle that he managed to make it out okay without any life threatening injuries.

I can only imagine how Orlando Canizales would look had he faced Gaby's competition such as Jeff Chandler, Richie Sandoval, Bernardo Pinango, Raul Perez, Greg Richardson, Miguel Lora, Duke McKenzie. Gaby Canizales would certainly look much better consistently had he faced Orlando's string of opponents.

Despite losing those fights against his best opponents I thought his bouts with Wilfredo Vazquez and Junior Jones were excellent display of technical skills.

Yes, he was never gonna lose that.
